mk1 focus ecu swap- easy or dealer job

Recommended Posts

ok so ive posted elsewhere , my mk1 focus 1600 petrol has a erratic temp gauge but doesnt appear to actauly be overheating

google has threads suggesting a new ecu cured it

can i buy a used ecu from the correct engine code and use that ?  or main dealer programme jobbie

help please really fucked off with it

A new ecu would need to be coded .

You would be better off sending it to some one like ECUTesting .They would confirm your fault and repair your unit . This wouldn't need any coding / programming

ECU is coded to the keys, you can diy it IF the ecu comes with at least two keys. If not you need either tech2000 or a licenced copy of forscan.

Erratic temp gauge might be the clocks starting to misbehave, which is actually more common, they are plug and play so get a £10 scrapyard set and change them first.

its had a brand new set of clocks 18 months ago

theres plenty of ecu with one key on ebay...wont one key do it?

i have a laptop version of forscan , dont really know wether it does coding or no?  what would recoding be under

I've an ECU, 1 key and a central locking module from a 1.6LX Estate 2001 if that's any good to you.

Good old google diagnostics !

what do you suggest i do?   pay someone £80 an hour to do what ive done so far?

Posted

personally I'd send the ecu away to be tested and repaired . Ecu faults are really rare to be honest and always a deeply suspicions diagnosis .

well ive gone with a ebay one...might work /might be a waste of money but i figured £35 isnt too bad to try

where would i send an ecu to be repaired anyway?

righto ebay ecu worked with its key , hasnt fixed the problem :(

Have you changed the coolant temp sensor or thermostat?

Posted

yes !!

engine feels and behaves normal - i "think" its thinking its hot when its fine , will also go back to normal on the gauge if i pull over and switch the  ign on/off

Posted

yes its a cylinder head temp sensor , they fit in the metal and dont contact the coolant

When running an OBD scantool in this state, does the temperature on the scantool match roughly what the dash is showing?

Posted

It will have a normal coolant temp sensor too - have you checked / changed that ?

pretty sure it does not ...happy to be proved wrong though

doesnt to my mind appear to be overly hot at any time

Pm me your reg and I will check on autodata . Pretty sure that era of ford used the cyl head sensor as a backup/ early warning device but still had a normal wet sensor . I seem to remember one being near the plugs somewhere
