She's not taken it well...

Hope you don't mind the sexist title, but bar the odd notable exception, this is a load of blokes talking tat. We've done cars that we've not enjoyed ourselves, but what's REALLY gone down badly with the better half?I think the Isuzu Trooper was my biggest hate-generator. It was almost as horrible to be a passenger in as it was to drive, and a spell of off roading left my poor wife feeling distinctly unimpressed. I was cacking it myself as I thought we were a gonner a couple of times! But I'd got so excited about the whole off roader thing, only to find myself saddled with this piece of crap. It is probably what caused 'that look' which to be honest, I quite like as it's saved me from some real shitters! If it wasn't that, it was my BX 16v. It was terrificly fast - so I drove like an idiot in it. This was a bad start. It also made horrible oil-burny smells at times, the heater wouldn't turn off and on a long journey, the sports exhaust made it horribly loud. She is also the only person in the world (genuine fact) who finds BX seats uncomfortable. The Volvo 740 would have been ok apart from the faff I had everytime I had to get it started (idle control issue!) and the fact that once, I went around a bend and the sunroof dumped a load of cold water on her head...But the biggest problem was probably my 'free' Dyane. I borrowed a tow car so we took a day out to collect it from Reading, where it had sat in a council lock up for 15 years. It was completely rotten and the engine was seized. I brought it home, spent some money getting keys cut for it and after a total expenditure of about £100, sold it as spares/brave repairs. I don't think I'll ever be allowed another 'free' car unless it has MoT and a warranty...

Well, not had any complaints so far! Yours, the odd notable exception

Mrs P hated the CX and teh GS  She amazingly found them uncomfortable and couldn't get to grips with the bizarre controls. But it was the uppy-downy suspension that really sealed their fates ... Oh, and the brown-ness of the GS

Posted

Mrs A could never get to grips (if that is the right expression  ) with the column change on the 96 I used to own, let alone the freewheel :( .

I don't get it. Having opposing tastes in wheels would be the same as one of a couple wanting kids, and the other one wanting to be childless. It's bound to cause trouble....

First land rover I had when down like a lead balloon, but that may have been the fact that I bought it and successfully kept it hidden for 3 months until my mother let the cat out of the bag... She didn't like going in my 325i much either, because it smelled like petrol, made a lot of noise and had concrete seats & soild suspension

Only complaint I had was with the Escort automatic - she couldn't get used to driving a two-pedal car, strangely enough. Mind you, the lady in question owned a 15-years-younger Kia Gay Pride at the time which I considered to be thoroughly inferior motoring and amusingly kept getting vandalised every two weeks making for interesting Sunday morning activities (scouring Scottish scrapyards for elusive Pride/Maz 121 lights/mirrors/wipers/etc). She seemed to enjoy that!I sold the Escort and bought a Mondeo same age as her Kia... she liked my new car but called it a day shortly after that

Every single BX i have owned. Starting with Vera the white shitter that she refused to drive following the wheel felling off incident and i had to eventually scrap costing me £400. Then i got a red 1.9 diesel one that she claimed that was too slow and like driving somehing from Space 1999... Then followed a slower 1.7 NA diesel which resuulted in more of the same comments. Finally a TZD turbo that broke down a lot, again she refused to drive.Yet she finds the £100 micra... Cute! Wimmin . Fucking hatstand

funny enough she hates them all, except the passat i brought her to replace the 21 :? go figure eh

Mrs L is rather good actually in that she really likes the R4 and is chuffed to bits with the Alto. I think she is perhaps just tolerant of the R11 and wouldn't mind seeing the back of it though. She liked my Alfa when it worked (which wasn't often enough) but since it's departure has slapped a 'No Alfas in future' rule on our household.

Hmm, well considering I have just broken up with Ms. J-J after 6 years I don't think it was any of the cars in particular - just the culmination of them all!The one she liked the most was the slug o matic Xantia non-turbo diesel. But for me it was too plain and ordinary - too reliable and at a genuine 29K miles seemed like new..She did admit to liking the CX - especially after noticing how much attention it gets! She hated the GSA though! the persistent ignition fault saw us stuck once at the end of the runway at Glasgow airport! (on a Friday evening a 5pm with no breakdown cover)When I got the Mk1 BX last year I was accused of getting it because I'd ran out of things to fix on the CX! - not true!Anyway - single now.....so I guess the cars won 8)So I'm now looking for a wooman who digs old shitters and retros (prob more the latter)Question: has anyone here ever had a nice 'look' from a woman while driving shite? - I actually have!

I regularly get given V's, wanker signs etc by attractive women as I attempt to slipstream them in the 1985 PONY 1200SL, they love it

I get so much skirt wanting to get in the back of the Galant on Saturday nights that it has to carry a warning: "Advance Bookings Only".Fancy some champagne?

My BX blotted its copy book in my girlfriend's eyes when it broke down on the A3 on the way back from Portsmouth. Turned out the autochoke mechanism was sticking. Also a couple of experiences of poor cold running, engine dying followed by much churning of starter motor. Now much better since I've tweaked it. Also when it developed a severe hydraulic leak ("octopus" pipes of course - on my way to work) which resulted in a flatbed truck experience and then I decided to get lots of other stuff sorted at the same time: clutch & cable, cambelt, fit supplied new rad and tophose from my stocks, 1 new tyre... and the bill exceeded £1000. I was not popular! More recently it was "trouble" again when it got a noisy wheelbearing.Add to that she doesn't like the 80s styling anyway. When I got home a couple of days ago she said "Have you heard about this new scrappage scheme? Trading in old bangers for new cars..." to which I just blew a raspberry :P which she said was exactly the reaction she was expecting! J-J: sorry to hear about Ms. J-J ... but I should enjoy being single for a while first before looking "now" for someone new who digs old cars  Mark.

The other half, I'm pleased to say really digs old cars, vans and bikes........so long as she never has to wash them, look after them or treat them to any TLC............so its shite for her for ever  I get to keep the quality shite for myself though :D

My better half tolerates my taste, but actually encourages my love of Sierras. She wants me to restore my plain white Sapphire! She hated my Astra, only travelling in it once, but approving of it's usefulness. Hates my Land Rover 109 and has never driven it, and never will be a passenger. has also told me if I ever turn up with a "Three Wheeler" she will attack it with a baseball bat. Poor thing. I might just buy a Scimitar, which she will love, and then reveal the true lineage..........................and I will wait for the thud of hickory upon GRP.I bet it never comes due to the V6 and "coupe" looks. (even though it has 4 wheels) she may NEVER notice...............But she loves cars though. She wants an Anglia, Corsair, and likes Sierras......Good girl!

I've certainly got not complaints about my better half. Every shite grumble has been utterly valid really.Hard to complain about a woman who practically screamed with delight when I used her money to buy her a Mini. I don't understand women though - I thought cars were meant to have suspension?! :D Oh, hold on. Now I've gone full circle and I'm being seriously impressed with my other half's motor!

Not really shite, but after she drove it round the block Mrs SL's reaction to the Primera we picked up yesterday was "Can I have one?".She never drives and rarely gets passengered in any of my old crocks, so as long they're not costing a fortune to run and can get me to and from work OK she has no issue with them.

Well, being a Diocesan Priest there is no Mrs Bluejeans. However, the Minxes* I have snared have never failed to be impressed by the leathers, frigid a/c and eerie refinement of the F plate 535i. Fold down armrests and one touch lecky sunroof. Fuck yeah!*We ain't talking any Arrow action either. Well, not in that sense.
