something fishy

My German backpacker guest is a keen fisherwoman and regretably left an old fish bait package to linger under the front seat of the 96 Suby Legacy GL that we have been travelling around in.Needless to say..there is now a very bad smell in the car and she needs to sell it before she leaves..How do you remove this fishy odor...

try Febreeze spray, it works well.

uhm..could u translate that into plain Kiwi _English...is it an interior cleaner..?

Sorry I just noticed where you are. Did you get Febreeze where you are? Ratdat just posted a link. If not, try an Old Skool cleaner made of lemon juice and bicarb, mix it with water and rub the carpets with it. Careful with it on the seats as the lemon juice has natural acetic acid in it and might slightly bleach any fabric.

Pour washing up powder on it!

Washing up powder contains an element which is solely used for odour removal - Boron Bromide. You can buy this separately and pour it on.

Febreeze and others don't really remove the smell.

Like i said, bicarb and lemon juice, bicarbonate of soda AKA baking soda.

When I was little a friend of my parents came along to show off his brand new car. He took us for a run in it but the new car smell became too much for me in the middle of the Tay bridge. You can't stop on the Tay bridge. Apparently I managed to vomit down the inside of the window seals. For the fishy car I would give the footwell a good wash, possibly with one of the solutions suggested above, then keep putting newspaper down until it dries.

I managed to spill a couple of litres of old gearbox oil all over the back seat and carpet in my 100A estate once. The seat wasn't too much of a problem as it was vinyl but I had to take all the carpet out and bin it.I had a mouse living in my 160B once too which began to reek of mouse piss after a few weeks. Took me ages to evict the little bugger but even after I had i could never fully get rid of the smell.

had a mouse in one of the vans once. Had to put the Jack Russell in and nearly lost her behind the dash. She got rid of it though. Luckily it's a big space with few soft bits so there wasn't a lingering smell once the mouse shit was hoovered out.

Wash with Biological washing powder or liquid. There is a product available at pet shops designed to be used when your mutt leaves a mess on the carpet ... uses some kind of enzyme to break up the smell. We used it with great success when the infant puked all over The Fuhrer's car (on its first outing  )
