AnthonyG Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 What about a Daimler, either from the Docker era or a Majestic Major? The Majestic will have that lovely Turner designed V8 and you can always pretend you've borrowed it from your 'friend' at the Pakistani embassy... eddyramrod and richardmorris 2
richardmorris Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 Who do you think you are? Lady Docker? Was a saying of my Gran. chaseracer and eddyramrod 2

Six-cylinder Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 Whitely? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1953-Armstrong-Siddeley-Whitely-18HP-very-rare-/122371366911?hash=item1c7de6dfff:g:wk4AAOSwcLxYD4Zb richardthestag, Junkman, doug and 1 other 4
Junkman Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 Whitely is half way to Sapphire. It's a superb over the road car, but completely unsuitable for owners, who don't know how to operate a lathe. It's a genuine vintage car, with the term 'genuine' used in the proper meaning of the word, i.e. not eBay horseshit. The Sapphire is mass produced in comparison, so you don't have to fabricate your own spares. doug 1
doug Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 This Whitely is on my dorstep if you want any help I could go round for a look at it for you, take more photos, generally have a look over it for you. I am no motor engineer though. Or if any of you are wanting to veiw I could collect you from airport/train station. Looks a fine old thing in the photos. p.s. I can work a lathe/mill!!! chodweaver and eddyramrod 2
Guest Breadvan72 Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 That is a very kind offer. I take on board, however, what JM says. I still tend to the view that we wait for the next good Sapphire to come along, but am open to persuasion re other suave-o-heaps that are not Project Impossible.
Junkman Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 Owning a Whitely should be a feeling no other car can provide, including a Sapphire. richardthestag 1
richardthestag Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 Except maybe a Typhoon richardmorris and Junkman 2
Magnificent Rustbucket Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 I shall remain sphinx-like. chaseracer 1
richardmorris Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 To be blunt, the sapphire looks like a Bentley competitor, the typhoon and whitely don't. I'm hoping to get a 11BN traction this year, and the other ASs look similar (to me). The sapphire looks majestic. Perhaps it's the spats?Of course my buying money is about to disappear as I have to buy the remaining half share of my company next month.
Guest Breadvan72 Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 Well, let's talk more about the Whitely, but NB all that lathe stuff. The one in the advert doesn't have to stay black forever. It was allegedly painted black to be in a telly show. I wonder what colour it was before, and what colour might suit it. I think that the later type of Sapphire pictured with the Hawker Hunter in the advert a page or so ago looks unlike a Bentley, and pretty cool, but maybe those ones have all vanished, or are spenner. Even the earlier and more stately type seems to me to have visual features that distance it from a Bentley, although I do see the point about it being a bit like one. Does everyone really hate the 9K one because of the colour scheme? Expensive to change the paint, I accept, but it could be changed in due course. Beige Vinyl wrap with Autoshite logo in 30 foot high flame letters YO. Of Lea Francis cars I know less than nothing. Are they worth learning about? Alvises tend to be driven by appalling toff gits, don't they? I am an appalling git, but at least not a toff one. I quite like the blue Hotchkiss, but think I may be in a minority on that.
Guest Breadvan72 Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 What about a Daimler, either from the Docker era or a Majestic Major? The Majestic will have that lovely Turner designed V8 and you can always pretend you've borrowed it from your 'friend' at the Pakistani embassy... The 50s Daimlers that I have spotted on sale seem to be chodbuckets, have suffered engine-bummage, and so on.
STUNO Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 Whittley Whittley Whittley Also not all Majestic Majors are V8's, earlier ones have a quite respectable six.
alf892 Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 I could never be toff........descended from long line of paupers and shysters. But I want an Alvis one day........
Guest Breadvan72 Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 Whittley Whittley Whittley Whitley, Whitley, Whitley, ITYF. Like the bomber, I suppose (Armstrong Whitworth Whitley - an oddly proportioned aeroplane). Only one t, but apols for typing Whitely before. I was misled by the eBay advert, and must confess that I had never heard of this type of car before last week.
Guest Breadvan72 Posted February 26, 2017 Posted February 26, 2017 The AS 234 and the Star Sapphire look pretty tasty. Presumably a bit kerching, if ever available at all.
somewhatfoolish Posted February 27, 2017 Posted February 27, 2017 ShiteShare is clearly for winnars; ASMs make me excited in my trousers as they have hemi throbbing parts. I also have perverted thoughts about Daimler MMs with their equally gargly Turner hemi V8 throbbing goodness. I do appear to be in a minority in preferring my shiteshare chariot to be pre-selecting though; pretending I'm patrolling the Western Desert in a Daimler Dingo while going to the shops is da shizzle and the slushmatic alternatives are extremely slushy. Whittley Whittley Whittley Also not all Majestic Majors are V8's, earlier ones have a quite respectable six. Shirley all Majors are V8, non-V8ness implies it's just a plain ordinary Majestic?
Junkman Posted March 1, 2017 Posted March 1, 2017 Do I explicitly have to post this here? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rover-P6-3500-V8-Automatic-1969-Series-1-with-Power-Steering-Take-a-Look-/122370367426 Seriously? Skizzer 1
Guest Breadvan72 Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 Phabtastical, but not stupid enough for this stupid plan. richardthestag 1
Longblackcoat Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 I know others get all moist at the thought of P6s, what with that 3528cc of hot V8 action and all, but they've never done it for me, especially when in that rather unfetching mustard colour. A P5B, on the other hand .... I'd deffo be interested in that. alf892 1
Guest Breadvan72 Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 Only if a Coupe, and even then I'm not sure.
Junkman Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 especially when in that rather unfetching mustard colour. If your mustard has turned this colour, it's time to send it off to the tropical insitute so they can research whether a new form of life has formed. But it is the most arresting colour of Tobacco Leaf, rather causing associations with pictures of Cuban girls rolling cigars on their bare thighs.Rah, like. chaseracer, Brodders, Magnificent Rustbucket and 2 others 5
Longblackcoat Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 Despite the promise of Cuban girls, the P6 sadly has a whiff (however unjustified) of bank manager about it which puts me right off. That and I think it's got, er, challenging looks Junkman 1
Guest Breadvan72 Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 I thought that LBC was posh, but it appears that he thinks that mustard is that brown gop that you get in dodgy caffs. No Grey Poupon up Watford way, I gather. I sort of agree re the Bank Manager bit, but wouldn't Mr Grimsdale have a sensible 2000 or 2200 instead? Junkman 1
Longblackcoat Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 M'learned friend should know that Grey Poupon is the sort of thing that them hippety-hoppety rap kids like to talk about, therefore it ain't posh, not even a little bit. And neither am I, obvs. All that said, I stand by my view that the Cuban Heel Rover is actually a sort-of mustard colour, assuming the mustard you're looking at is Maille Wholegrain rather than that terrible Colman shite. Junkman 1
Junkman Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 Düsseldorfer Löwensenf extra scharf for me, please. Anything else is just mustard for wimps. And even that one isn't quite the same since 1986. OK, keeping my tentacles out for moar ASS shite then. HMC 1
