Reading the fails though;

Reason(s) for failure

Offside Rear Rear position lamp(s) not working (1.1.A.3b) - I've had the plug fall out before.. 3 cross head screws and the cluster lifts off

Nearside Front Front constant velocity joint gaiter insecure to the extent that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt etc (2.5.C.1a) - big cable tie?

Nearside Front Anti-roll bar linkage has excessive play in a ball joint (2.4.G.2)

Offside Front Anti-roll bar linkage has excessive play in a ball joint (2.4.G.2) - They were euro car parts finest drop links a good few years ago...

Steering column universal joint has excessive play (2.1.5) - as people mentioned above, maybe

If you want I'll try and get a pass out this weekend and help you fix it? Unless the glee from seeing it go and getting another wbod is greater than your desire to keep it!

I had a quick look at the bottom UJ and tightened the nut up and I'll have a look at the upper one tomorrow probably, hopefully that's all it is. I would have had a look at the top one today but a bloody wasp kept attacking me! Drop links are no big deal and the CV joint gaiter is something I normally tell the garage to sort out if it needs doing. The back light should just be a bulb but i didn't have time to take the cluster off this morning. I meant to check yesterday but got called into work. It was working when I checked all the lights last week.

The oil use hasn't got any worse about a pint every 400 miles or so. The engine light has been on for the last couple of weeks but running the same as usual and nothing said on MOT. The wheel well was full of water the other day and appears to be coming from the o/s rear light cluster so that needs sealing. It needs a couple of tyres as well and the heater is still piss poor and it takes a while to warm up so could maybe do with another flush. On the plus side the rear brakes never got a mention so maybe the caliper is behaving itself at last.

Thanks for the offer of help but I work weekends. It may just join the Xantia on the drive and become another 'I really must fix that motor'. it depends on what I find with the steering column if the the top UJ isn't loose it's not worth the expense of repairing. I can get £140 for it from 'Remove My Car'. My immediate problem is I don't have a roadworthy car to use and can't get to work if called in so must pick something up in the next couple of days.

Well if you get all that done and it lives I'll flash torque over the code if you want and see what it is! Sounds like if the steering issue is easily fixed it won't want much else!

£140 though, you could buy something ok for that. I'm surprised cavcraft isn't already driving down in something suitable* now for a swap!

Engine code is P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold. I did the hold throttle and brake pedals down and counted the flashes method.

The £140 is very tempting and the Meriva isn't a car you can say needs saving.

Mmmm, it's thrown that code (or similar) before, about a year or so before you had it... It went after a damn good thrashing to Northampton, Peterborough, Spalding then home...

If it's going to need a cat soon, even a pattern one will cost about that £140...

I agree, it doesn't warrant saving, but if you can beat another 6 months out of it for £30, is it worth it? I can clear the code if it helps

If you do scrap it though, swap the battery with a shagged one that'll just start it enough to drive onto the truck, that wasn't long new before you had it!

If the emissions are ok for the MOT, I wouldn't worry about that code or the catalytic converter too much.

We never did! I out it down to lots of short journeys with a gubbed thermostat! Surprised the Zafira hasn't done it yet, it must run nice and hot!

I'd be happy if all my £300 cars failed mots like that!

Honestly, that's a few hours work and very little expenditure. The steering columns almost always just need the pinch bolts doing up tightly (and I mean do both up VERY tight) and you'll be rewarded with less rattles over the bumps, too.

Fix, that's not a bad fail sheet at all. Any cheap £150 heap could end up a lot worse. Leaking boot is Rover 75 heritage so enjoy :)
