Low oil pressure question...

Had this yesterday with my old dears Polo with the crappy 1.2 3 cylinder that seems to have a myriad of problems (timing chains/tensioners, valves....)

She told me the oil light had come on and I told her to pull over immediately as I thought the engine was about to shit itself. Didn't know about this orange light malarky. Put a litre in and all is well. Thing is, its only done around 2.5k of pottering around since it had an oil and filter change. Pretty crap really. Meanwhile my K11 Micra that has been flogged mercilessly for 9k  hasn't used a drop

Not familiar with VW pez engines but....

The diseasals of similar vintage such as my T4 have two oil pressure gauges; I believe I'm correct in saying that the use both their individual readings and difference in pressure between the two to decide whether to give you a low pressure warning.

I did a long motorway run in hot weather recently, when I stopped and the engine idled for a while the oil pressure warning light came on, caused I think by a sudden change in pressure.

I also had overfilled with oil when I did a service previously, only by half a litre at most, so I think that may have been part of the issue.

When no leak was apparent I started up again and no warning light.

Double pillock !

For the following reasons

a) not checking the oil often enough

and

B) getting us and you all panicked over an amber oil level light

😄

Yellow light = it'll probably be fine.

Red light = it probably won't be fine.

Only overfilled by half a litre? :-)

That's quite a bit of over-fillage!
