Vehicle without NOVA: Barg or disaster?

Recommended Posts

Sorry if this has been asked before.. In fact I think I've asked it before..

Should I buy a vehicle without a NOVA form? It seems like a massive barg (probs because it can't be registered?!!)

It has all Italian paperwork whatever that means..

Will it be impossible to register?

Will I need to pay VAT?

It isn't a problem as long as you have the Italian papers then no VAT currently. NOVA isn't a massive problem as you could say that you have just imported it. They don't ask for proof of entry and no one checks when you bring a car in. This could all change mind but it wouldn't put me off if the price was right.

Very helpful, thanks! What Italian paperwork should I be checking for?

It's a bit of a minefield, but not impossible to sort.

When I imported the Escort I did the NOVA declaration straight away to save any grief because if NOVA hasn't been declared HMRC charge £5/day from when they think it arrived. You get a couple of weeks to make the declaration. Nobody asked for any proof of when my car landed, and it was wearing temporary transit plates when it did, but I kept ferry tickets etc just in case.

NOVA declaration is fiddly to do as you have to register with HMRC to do so, but it's all online so not the end of the world. Once the car has been declared here with no tax owing on it the registration process only takes a couple of weeks.

There wasn't any VAT to pay on mine, but DVLA will require proof of that before even considering registration. If the Italian paperwork is anything like the German equivalent all the type approval codes etc will be on it.

Just say you imported it yesterday. You need to provide a name and address of the vendor in Italy though, so helps if you have somebody over there who can be your patsy.

If you need any in depth advice send me a PM dude. I have registered about a dozen old cars now under every conceivable circumstance, including cars brought in and no NOVA done, cars imported before NOVA but never registered etc and consider myself depressingly adept at the process now.

Also, there is no VAT payable on goods imported from within the EU, so don't worry about that

At the moment but this could change next year so worth keeping an eye on it. Who knows how much duty the French might stick on old chod when we leave the EU
