didn't the Bedford VAL used in the film go back into service as a coach before been scrapped in the 1990's?

AFAIK aye. The problem with that Duple one as alluded to before is that the panels and glass might be holding the frame together so probably spares for one more saveable.

^ Yup, the IJ Val was pressed back into service, and the rear doors welded up. I can't help but think that vehicles like this, if around now when we have so much online selling via eBay and the like, would never have been weighed in. I think owners of film/TV vehicles are much more savvy with it them now. Having said that, I remember seeing that Dingle fella's 5 series on eBay back in 2012 - it was up for £699 or best offer, and was worth that all day long I'd have said. This one:

 

On a different note, this thread on a coach conversion on RR makes interesting reading. Obviously not a VAL, but still looks great.

I got to drive my actual school bus on the same route when I got into coach driving. Same headmaster at the school too, called him a wanker as I'd always wanted too when he turned out to still be the same cock as he always was.
