How long does it take to sell a shitter?

Now I don't know if it's the idea of the bank's or what but a cheque takes 10 days to clear in the system, it is credited to your account within 5 days and you can spend the money...however it can be recalled and you end up in the red, ONLY if it's been clear for 10 days are you safe that the money is yours :?

I thought this only applied in exceptional circumstances, such as a forged chequebook being used or a bank error crediting the wrong amount. I've never heard of having to wait longer than the cheque clearing time before it super-clears or anything. Otherwise what's "clearing" for?

Mind you, I'm 31 and I've written about 6 cheques in my life. I hate them with a passion, only reserving more hatred for people that use them in front of me and write with the speed of an arthritic snail. And then guarantee the cheque by using a frickin' debit card!!

*realises this isn't the grump thread*

Ive heard of cheques being recalled after they have cleared, I cant remember the ins and outs of it but I remember there being a problem with them on E.bay, especially with Nigerian scammers "buying" your car with a cheque for more than the asking price and asking you to sort out the shipping by paying the excess money into a "friends" account. You pay in the "excess" money from your own account after the scammers cheque has cleared and a few weeks later the bank take the money back off you as the cheque was forged or bounced or whatever.

Not that the guy buying Station's car is a nigerian scammer or anything.

tis 10 days till a cheque is safe,i'm pretty sure its the same for a bankers draft aswell.

I'm sure its slightly different with the bankers draft as the bank takes the money straight from your account into theirs, thus making the draft a guaranteed payment...mind you they probably have got some other way of screwing you with it though

Ah well I live and learn

guarranteed payment after the clearing time.

had a look, banks recommend 6 working days for a draught to fully clear.

cash or card is much easier.

Paypal can be iffy too.Even after you have transfered the money into your own account Paypal can recover it and hold onto it until whatever so called problem with a buyer is sorted.Happened to me a while ago selling a vintage camera, posted it with a sign for tracking order.

This scammer sent an email saying he hadn't recieved the camera. When I checked my bank account the money had gone.I contacted the post office and found the parcel had been delivered and signed for.I then phoned this "buyer" informing him it had been delivered and I was about to contact the police over the theft of money from my account.Funny how it was delivered five doors up the road had just arrived via a kind nieghbour.Bollocks had it.

Assuming 'special delivery - next day delivery' is guaranteed to arrive for a 'next day delivery', and he promised he was sending it out yesterday it hasn't arrived in today's post, and I can only assume he's having a serious problem coming up with the money, in which time (two weeks), I've had two possible buyers I've had to turn down. The fact he's the original owner, and I really want him to buy it to avoid the Hayabusa engine/wide wheels buyer as I know he'll look after it, I'm wondering how long he's going to keep this up for? This is really making matters worse as I need to put a deposit on a flat this week, not that I need an excuse to have money on a car I'm selling. I'll give him one more chance on this, stupid as it sounds.

Station you should treat it as "First come" basis

The next person with the money - SELL IT to them :D

The original owner has had many a chance.

Infact you should ring him up and tell him you have others waiting.

If you don't recieve money by "X" day , then he is off your list and it is getting sold.

I wish you the best of luck

Well, after ringing the fella to enquire whether he sent another cheque out, he ummed and ahhed and said he was going to bring it up FROM LONDON to the WIRRAL (250 miles) and HAND DELIVER IT.

His first letter got lost on special delivery, and he didn't know where his tracking number was.

I kind've knew he was bullshitting (I can't understand why) by the second cheque disappearance, so when a non-show happened today (surprise surprise), I sent a text to see if he had got lost, and even rang him when he didn't return my text (no answer).

I'm not too bothered anymore as he's obviously a timewaster on a scale I've never experienced before in my life - he sounds like he's 50+ - what is his problem? I would like to get some kind of nice revenge on him though, like getting him up here on the offer of '1/2 price' via the train, and just not turning up. I'm not vindictive - I don't like being messed around either. Waddya think?

I dont think you ought to do that. The guy probably wants the car, but other things in his life are stopping him from having it, and it seems like he cant bring himself to admit (even to himself, let alone you) that buying it is beyond him, for financial or other reasons.

The warning signs were there as well but you ignored them!

You could order him a pizza or use a couple of Wat's 'call me back' phone spam services though for mild retribution.

I actually think he's been messing me around from the start. He could've told me that he a)didn't have the money b)didn't send the cheque, etc. Why are people like that?

People are like that because they're arseholes. I know it isn't nice having a downer on most of humanity, but the sooner you operate on this principle, the easier life becomes. Works for me, and you can never truly be disappointed.

It doesn't help that you really need shut of this car, and that things haven't exactly been a bag of roses for you ATM - I can but sympathise.

If it were me I'd fuck this geezer off. You have gone above and beyond in tolerating this fella's cock ups, as far as I'm concerned he's missed his chance. You send him a final message \ voicemail saying politely that he's messed you around once too often and that enough is enough, and that you're sorry you couldn't come to an agreement. Keep it civil and that, even if you do want to shit in his cornflakes by this stage. I would want to.

As for what's going to happen to it, you need the money. I didn't want my Piazza to be broken up but someone from RR wanting parts for a Mk2 Escort track car came from Germany and stumped up the cash. Oddly, he left with it and a good deal of my credit card deficit got paid off later that day.

I know you're at your wit's end, so hang in there.

Tell him you are by his way next week and can deliver the car. Tell him to make sure he has the payment in cash. He'l probably make his excuses and show his true colours.
