I didn't mean as I a salon car being used. I meant it in the context of say those Land Rovers above or the numerous Escorts that are no way as old as they would appear on paper.

To me the shell is essentially the car. Change this and it's no longer what it was just because it's got some old bits on it.

That's becoming a philosophical question. How much can you change before it's no longer the object it started off as? (Ship of Theseus)

I'm not sure I really care. If you're looking at a historic car, whose value is dependent on its originality, you shouldn't be relying  on  the V5 as evidence of provenance. If it's just a car, as long as  the parts have been replaced properly I don't care when that was or how many bits have been changed.

I think in the case of my dad's Land Rover restoration, the DVLA will be told as little as possible and the ID plate from the original chassis will somehow find its way onto the new galvanised one. I distinctly remember him chopping the plate off the old chassis before bridging it.

The damn thing is being built back to as-original-as-possible spec with replacement parts where needed, but a lot of original parts are simply getting refurbished.

Slightly off topic but look at what someone has paid for essentially build number 1 rouse 304 cosworth I.d and log book with a random sierra shell, all of the rouse specific parts are long gone

My favourite mod on those Rousesport Cossie's was the bit of foam to stop the cassettes rattling in the console , supposedly because of the extra g-force generated over a standard Saph.
