Late 80's Fords with EEC IV engine management- does anybody know how to read/clear the fault codes from one of these?

 

Do you need dedicated hardware to read the codes?

Is this one with a three point connector under the bonnet like my 93 Mondeo? OBD1 readers are available...

If it's got an OBD socket any cheap reader will clear it. If not I'd try disconnecting the battery and reconnect.

They're a bit of a faff to use, you have to follow the guide to the letter to get the codes out, but they do the job. They plug into a 3 pin diagnostic port as mentioned above, location probably varies but mine is near the battery.

Basically the ECU spews the codes out as a series of flashes and the reader counts them and displays the number, some readers you get don't do that and you have to count them yourself, which is even more of a faff
