Silicone sealant removal?

Recommended Posts

About a year ago my disco started leaking in, and I tracked it to somewhere in the corner guttering joint / windscreen area. So I banged a load of silicone sealant over the area and made an unnoticeable* fix.

Bastard thing has started to leak again. I'm thinking I should get rid of existing sealant before putting new on, but how? It's pretty well stuck. Is there anything that dissolves silicone sealant?

You can get silicon remover gel, it comes in the same type of tube the sealant comes in and it sort of softens the sealant and makes it come loose.

You still need to scrape most of it off first though, it's a total fuckin nightmare tbh.

Wilkinsons sell a unibond silicone remover which you put on with a silicone gun but there are so many warnings on the pack it will probably dissolve the whole roof.

In fact it specifically says do not apply to aluminium.

The roof on a Discovery is steel not aluminium.

Thinners, even barbecue fuel should do it.

By the way, barbecue fuel is ace for getting rid of freshly applied sikaflex.

Bugger. Think I'll apply more sealant and gaffer tape instead.
