I have this book and it's definitely worth a read. Some nice stories about some interesting cars (from V12 Ferraris to racing Minis/Escorts) mostly during the 70s.

A misguided friend bought me this book.  It is awful.  The author comes across as a smug cock, a huge sexist, and an all round dickhead.  He inherited money, and appears not to have done a stroke of work in his life.  The book is the vanity product of an entitled twat.   The title tells you all you need to know.

Not at all envious then.............

Mind you, I was given the Alan Clarke book to read. Now he really was an utterly vile man with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Alan Clark was quite funny on occasion and clearly did not give a fuck.   Compare him to a contemporary sleazebag like Jonathan 'sword of truth' Aitken and he doesn't seem so bad.

Nope, not at all.  I don't like the things (cars included) that the appalling author of the appalling book likes.

No redeeming qualities? Didn't he shag two sisters and their mother, put 356 running gear in a Beetle and bought a DS Decapatoble(sp?) new then kept it till he died ? Not to mention uttering the immortal put down about Nouveau Hestletine ;" He had to buy his furniture".

The man was Alan B'stard incarnate and my idea of just what a Tory MP should be.

I remember him writing in his column in Car , that when travelling between his Castles in Kent and Scotland his Tdi Disco was faster than his ( modern ) Continental R, because even though it would only cruise at 95 ,you didn't need to stop as often for fuel.

I remember that very article.  I also remember that in spite of hating his politics and pretty much everything he stood for, I had to allow him some grudging respect for turning up pissed in the house -

Oh and for shagging all those women from the same family - there's a small part of me that envies him that experience.  I don't think he ever pretended to be anything he wasn't.

He openly admired Hitler, so can't have been all bad I suppose.
