Exhausted...

Fitted a new exhaust this afternoon to Focus. The old one was literally hanging off, the 3 of the hangers had rusted off and the back box had a hole in it. Anyway it was the original one piece Ford exhaust. Fitted a new one including the Cat with a Klarius system from ECP. All new hangers and clamps, with sealing paste on the joints. I've put exhausts on before. It's now blowing on the centre connector - the bit that connects the centre and cat. I've tightened up the clamps, pasted extra seal round the joint but it's still doing it. Any thoughts here?

I'm in a better place than this morning as despite the blow, the exhaust is now secure and actually attached to the car.

No help whatsoever, but was out on the drive at 7.00 am this morning buggering about with the back box on the Prelude. Pipe to back box snappage just as soon as the car was up for sale. Much titting around with Gun Gum and a repair section almost sorted it. Still a slight blow. FFS. Expect to be on the drive lying on my back again soon.

Ecp changed the moulding on their cheap meriva exhausts, the current backbox hits the chassis occasionally, the old one never did it.

Hopefully in 2 years when it starts to blow they will have changed the moulding again so it doesnt

That was the one bit I didn't buy from them. I bought Holts Fire Paste. I've had them in the past and they've been ok. I can't be arsed with taking the system off and taking it back, I haven't the time to piss about like that. Might it seal up more as time goes on due to the carbon filling up any gaps? It's been suggested to silicon seal round the joint, not sure that sounds a good idea, I thought that was what the exhaust paste was for!

Had a look in the shed, I've got some high temp copper silicone, might smear some of that on top of the paste that's there already. I've tightened the clamps up really tight so by rights it shouldn't blow but it does.

I've seen silicon used on bikes too. Just burnt off when I've tried it.

Is there a decent length of pipe between the centre and the cat?  If there is then it won't get that hot there, if there isn't then it will....

I've had a quick peek when I've got home. It's leaking round one of the pipe clamps. I'll try to smear some more gobbo on the top of the connector where it looks to be leaking.

I found the Klarius system I fitted to my Rover 45 last week to be very quiet and a perfect fit . It's as quiet as the Rover/unipart box I fitted around 5 years ago.
