Lankytim Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Hi gang, As some of you may know, many modern lorries need a chemical called AdBlu and this is often delivered via an IBC and a 240v pump. The pump at work had been getting a bit noisy and so was replaced with a new one. After a bit of begging I managed to score the old one. yay! Anyway, I got it home and had a play with it. I fitted a domestic plug so I could plug it in and fired it up. It's slightly noisy but not by much. The remaining AdBlu mixed with the veg and created a horrible mayo mess... it's all been cleaned out now. The biggest problem I have is that it doesn't want to prime itself! If I suck the veg through it works great but if I pull the hose out to swap barrels it air locks. Is there any way around this? I can only describe the pump as a centrifugal impeller type, I'm not sure if that's the correct term. I'm surprised it won't prime itself easily as I can't imagine my work colleagues wanting to mess about too much when swapping IBCs Also, the trigger mechanism only worked when it was fully inserted into the AdBlu tank on the lorry, I think this was done via a magnet in the filler neck. Is there a way of bypassing this so it works and cuts off solely via the trigger? Thanks in advance!
cobblers Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Unless it's a positive displacement pump (Ie it uses pistons or cogs like an oil pump) then it won't self prime well at all - it relies on the mass of the fluid being flung out of the blades to "pull" the fluid into it, in air they do bugger all. If you put a valve before the pump and shut it off when changing the barrel you might get away with it, but it'll still probably choke up on a good air bubble if you let all the veg dribble out of the feed pipe. alf892 1
KruJoe Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Aye, this ^ Could you add a priming "grenade" from an XUD just before your new pump?Or does it suck so hard it'd pull it flat?
dave21478 Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 I would think a non-return valve on the suction side would help.
Lankytim Posted February 19, 2016 Author Posted February 19, 2016 It does suck mega hard, I think the pipe is far too big for a priming bulb to fit anyway. Someone has already mentioned a one way valve to go on the end of the inlet pipe. I think that may be the way to go. sierraman 1
robthedonkey Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Theres no way of getting that handle to work without a magnet ... in the filler neck there is a magnet insert i have one on my desk to test the pumps at our place... get a magnet or get a diesel trigger mate .. dave21478 Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Dunno what you would call it in English, but all the garden centres and DIY shops here that deal with well pumps and the like sell these suction hoses that have a filter and one way valve in the end. http://www.ebay.fr/itm/Kit-Aspiration-Pompe-a-Eau-De-surface-MASTER-PUMPS-KITASP-74014377-/400354517250 I have one and it works fine with diesel, although the O-ring in the valve needs changed every now and then as the oil makes it swell up. Could probably get an oil resistant one but I am very lazy.

Or just taking the whole thing to bits to see what's what.

forddeliveryboy Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Mount the pump below the level of the veg oil. Stanky 1
