I had to buy a new set of tyres recently and I always buy part worn and never had a problem and I have them fitted to all my familys cars as well I've never understood the OMGUSEDTYRESFIERYDEATH reaction some people have for these.

Anyway I got a set of 4 Dunlop Winter Super Sports delivered for £33, they were listed as having 5mm tread but the ones I was sent had hardly any wear at all and tons of tread.

I stopped buying them when local to me they were about a tenner a tyre cheaper than new. If I could get a pair with 5mm of tread of a decent make, no older than 6 years or so fitted for £40-50 I'd go for it. But unfortunately I can't so new makes more financial sense.
