Complete with mega gas leak from the ruptured main. Here's a vid of the bridge going.

I haven't heard the mainstream media mention that a lot of York as well as large number out of outlying suburbs (including one of the two main retail parks) had no phone or mobile for the best part of a day, plenty were without electricity too. I know someone who runs a couple of restaurants, according to him it was chaos and quite weird/scary having no way of altering anyone to anything other than by pigeon/getting on your bike and trying to find a way out.

Worse still, the Council advised people not to venture in, unlike all previous flood events (and there've been plenty), so a massive loss of trade.

2day anklebiter dropped into 'Leeds B Soc.' to deposit a bit of Xmas money...

Guy takes cash, issues 'signature' receipt but no statement

" Err, sorry, Leeds (head office) server is OFF!"

Well I don't k ow what the answer is and for once Wakefield didn't get flooded, in fact it was a very nice walk on the canal after the rain the other day. Shame they are building a lovley new bypass over the flood plane with plans in place for a shit ton of new houses...

The field behind us is a nice big lake as always you can see it from the hill I live on, that's planned to have that stupid HS2 run straight through it, I'm sure that'll help it drain better

Imagine if half the country had a week's heavy rain. Internet off, mobile network compromised and overloaded, power cuts, supermarkets running low.

The thing is, for all the talk of 'unprecedented' rainfall, the amount hasn't increased over the last 100 years but flooding is getting worse and more frequent - even ignoring all the new builds in flood plains. Go back three or four hundred years and there were some serious floods, even with loads of river meanders, flood plains, uncompacted farm land, no massive roads/warehouses/carparks and lack of grouse moor drain cutting. I reckon there'll be a waking up to modern living in this century, prompted by social media, ebay, paypal and ATMs all going off at the same time.

If climate change really does make things worse and kicks in as expected given our refusal to abandon fossil fuels, things could be nasty. Do you escape in the diesel Disco or the Dyane?
