Rootes got the contract to build the Iranian national car in the 1960s because they were the only ones to turn up to a meeting with the Industry Minister visiting London in circa 1964 (a telegram announcing his arrival and desire to sign such a contract was sent to the export sales offices of all the British car makers of the time).

May I ask, where you obtained the information on the above mentioned meeting?... As far as I could gather IranNational (founded by Khayami Brothers) used to build Commer trucks in Iran, and therefore had association with Rootes prior to the Paykan contract. They did though traveled around Europe in search of a suitable car for Iran, but finally they settled on the mighty Rootes Arrow series!

I'm just reading "The Motor Makers" by Martin Adeney, page 274 describes the above almost word for word.

Rootes Overseas Export Manager Mr. Ted Justice got a cable from a man he had never met before, Mr. Ahmed Khayami.

It was an invitation to a meeting in the Hilton Hotel London on the following Sunday for the purpose of setting up a car assembly operation in Tehran.

You probably wont get a reply from Pakyan Hunter for a while. He apprears on here once every blue moon and comments on anything he can to do with Hunters and then dissapears for ages. I think he might be slightly obsessive.....

Welcome to the forum BTW.

Thanks holbeck, that is an intersting fact indeed! I would have loved to be a fly on the wall in that Hotel Lobby! That must have been an intersting conversation! Mr. Ted Justice: "You want do what? Start an assebmly line for Hunter in Iran? Is this some sort of a joke?! The car is a NAIL mate! Don't do it!!!" ... ;)

Dear HillmanImp,

I would like to comments on more things than the Bloody Hunters! But somebody has to carry the Paykan/Hunter torch around here, and my Daily Blog (http://www.PaykanHunter.com) duties is preventing me from extending my thoughts to even more of these British Nails! ;)

To all you "Shtie Experts": I really need your help here! I want more information on this Dodge Husky which was the Hillman Hunter Pick-Up for South Africa market only. I can only find this image on the car, and seems to be no other information/pictures available for it on the web. Thanks! I know that you guys won't let me down here!

Does anybody know where this museum is located? Could it be Australia? Or New Zealand perhaps?...

If the Hunter rally car is the winning 68 London to Sydney one then I think that museum will be in Australia, as *I think* the car was left there for the local importers to promote the Hunter range. If its not the Cowan car, it could be the one driven by some RAF boys which also finished the rally.

I think the car in the background is just a replica of the Andrew Cowan's car, I was under the impression that the Hillman Owners Club of UK now owns the rally car. But I agree with you this place must be in Australia, would be nice to get more information about it though... :?
