I was told that in Germany you have three goes at the driving test. If you fail after the third attempt you must see a psychiatrist who may issue a report to say that you are mentally capable of taking the test. If the trick cyclist refuses to issue the report you are travelling by öffentlicher Verkehrthe for the rest of your life.

You have to wait 2 weeks after a failed driving test. After 3 fails, you have to wait 3 months before you can try again. After 6 fails they send you to a "medical-psychological assessment", the outcome decides if you may try again. Somebody who reached that point is propably ready to move to the funny farm anyway and should really not drive a car.

 

Correction, just googled that this changed in 2008, you can now try as often as you like, you just have to respect the 2 weeks between tests.

 

Also consider that driving school is compulsory here with a minimum of 12 hours of driving plus a night, autobahn and open road trip before you can do the test. The driving school decides if you are ready for the test or you need more lessons. After a failed driving test you have to take additional lessons.

So I was almost right up to 2008! Thanks for the correction. There's plenty of drivers here who should be on the bus instead of behind the wheel; including Maureen from Driving School who actually revelled in her crapiness rather than hanging her head in shame.

TÃœV tried have legislation changed and shorten it to one year for older cars on claims that the failure rate increases with car age (not really a  surprise...). Would have doubled their revenues, but they didnt succeed after some journalist found their statistics been manipulated...

Ze Germans, manipulating results?  Impossible.
