Learner Driver Insurance

Call out to other old fart parents or young whipper snappers who is just has driving lysense

#1 son, lets call him Matt just got his driving licence and wants to learn. MiL TheStag has a roadlegal shed of a Daewoo Matiz on the drive which she uses once a fortnight! She offered it to us for training Matt Thestag. BUT she still need it and it has her NCB on her policy. (probably through sheilas wheels - Girl Powa etc etc)

Mrs Thestag plans to get Matt insured through Marmalade?!? She did tell me but I just heard blah blah blah etc

Mrs Thestag tried to add the Matiz to her own policy but you cannot have two policies on one car apparently! Mrs thestag is insured to drive any car 3rd party with owners permission on her own policy. She is pretty sure that is enough with Marmalade to teach Matt Thestag to drive.

Me? not a fucking scooby!

I will call my insurers but the problem generally is that the spotty 19 yo in the Bangalore call centre wont have a clue either or just feed me BS.

Anyone been here? And yes I know it would be easier to buy my own matiz and insure it on my policy tbh but that would just annoy Mrs and MiL thestag.

Insure it in Whippersnapper's name with MiL , Mrs and you as named drivers. Mil can keep her NCB safe ( I think for up to 2 years) and it seems the more named drivers you put on kids insurance the cheaper it gets.

We just added my son as a named driver to SWMBO's policy.

But only the named driver has the driving other cars extension to policy, so Matt TS still can't drive Mil TS Matiz.

I'm in exactly the same boat for my eldest, lets call him Selfish Bastard.........  :-D

Now I hope I have not misread this as was planning to take a policy out for a month over the Xmas period and just take him out as much as possible when he's off from 6th form.

It looks to me as this is a second additional policy to cover the learner, as the car has to be insured in its own right.

For me this was even cheaper than adding him as a named driver to my existing policy.

It might be another option.

that is what we are thinking of doing

so MiL keeps the policy in her name.

Mrs TS or me sit in the passenger seat while Matt scares the crap out of us using his marmalade learner policy. if for any reason we need to drive the Matiz then we do so under our own policies and 3rd party

I think...

probably just keep a copy of MiL ins certificate in the glovebox
