Engine Rattling?

Recommended Posts

5 month old, 4k mile new shape Corsa afflicted by that common Corsa thing that pretty much every Corsa C does, the ticking which sounds like a skeleton wanking in a biscuit tin, all Vauxhalls are shite etc.

What is it that causes it on Corsa Cs, bottom end or timing chain, likely to be the same on new Corsa?

They all sound like diseasels to me, petrol or diesel, would be interested to know the answer!

TIming chain and timing chain adjuster in particular.  Been covered here loads of times, biggest problem is extended service intervals and garages using poor quality oil.  Change frequently and will last a decent time.  Clearly your example isn't quite that as it is so new so must be a guarantee issue.  Bottom ends don't rattle; they thump.

Personally, I think that the advantage is that they let you know by making the noise before failing.

But any car, rubber belt or chain, serviced decently (and that means over serviced when faced with daft 20K intervals) will generally be ok.

Around 04/05 they had habit of the camshafts coming loose on 1.2's, kicking up a racket that most ignored and eventually the cam snaps, still-pissed Manuel not back on engine building is he.

Talking of stupid service intervals, why would a maker stamp their timing chains/guides out of a block of Edam and lubricated by the contaminated gnats piss (especially in Diesels) that oil will be after 20k miles?...more worryingly why do otherwise seemingly intelligent people who buy their products believe that shit.

I keep thinking that my engine is a bit rattly, then I remember it's an XUD and realise it's fine!

On a 2002 1.2 corsa low oil caused the engine to make one fuck of a noise, the oil lubricated the chain pulleys/tensioners, and when it got low, they complained. Top up/oil change usually cured it for a few months
