Apologies if it's been announced here elsewhere, but Charlie Ware (the Morris Minor bloke) died last week.

Definitely one of the motor trade's characters.

Definitely a character, made a fortune property developing, lost most of it, became a fan of durable car ownership (his term for autoshiteing) and Morris Minors in particular, set up workshops and manufacturing in Sri Lanka (not just for cheap labour, but to actually help them out). I know they have moved a few times and I'm not even sure if it was still solely his company, but I hope it keeps going. I just wish they could source some reliable "Lucas" parts. (A big wish I know as Lucas rarely did)

RIP indeed, had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times a true gent of the broken mould variety. He used to smoke a drug dealer spec E28 around Bath long after they became unfashionable and were prime police pull material. Great bloke.

In 1986, whilst looking for a year in industry, in the middle year of my HND at Coventry Polytechnic, I read about the Sri Lanka Idea and so I wrote to Mr Ware (Rip) asking if he had any need of paid help.  He sent me his book and passed my letter on to a company in Wells, called AD Engineering, who were responsible for some of the engineering of the simple improvements.

I went down there for an interview and was taken for a ride in a rally prepped minor with full roll cage, 5 speed box, 1275 A series, disc brakes, and proper suspension.

Unfortunately there was 2 reasons why I didn't end up working for them. 1) they didn't actually want to pay me, and quite frankly I'd need something to live on for a year, and 2) I transferred to the 2nd year of the degree, and the course tutor was adamant that it wouldn't meet with the expectations of the course.

Ironically, on Graduation in 1989 I ended up working for the prince of darkness for 9 years.

I don't even know where the book went.

I flogged him a Traveller back in 1999. He drove up all the way to Heswall on The Wirral to meet me at the Shell garage. Top bloke.

RIP a like-minded soul.

Pity there's not more like him around.

Dad?  Is that you? :-P

Seriously, though.  Such a shame to hear this.  RIP Mr. Ware.
