Not done that route for a number of years! Do they even run ferries on that route any more?

Seem to remember the ferry was an ex cargo boat that had been converted to passenger and vehicle ferry, so it was a bit basic and boxy. Fryup onboard ship was as bad as any of the other boats, so well worth avoiding.

I thought you lived near Manchester, hairnet?

You shouldn't need to catch a ferry to get to Herts...

But if you really want to, how about Dover-Dunkirk?

youve been on stena lately

and i bring me own unless its tea :D

cant carry it on the bike :P

Dover to Dunkirk with DFDS was good a couple weeks ago, some kind of Flanders promotion, £59 return for a car and 2 people.

Dunkirk doesn't have any of the migrant problem Calais has, and its only 30km further up the coast.

dunkirk was the orig choice but for ease id rather use the tunnel

I've been through twice in the last fortnight - no real issues. Use Dunkirk, or the tunnel.

Takes an age to get across to Dieppe

Oh poo. You just reminded me about the show, I went to book and there are no more entries for cars. Arse. Oh well, maybe next year (again).

My preferred Channel crossing, this. In all the times I have used it, the crossings have never been more than half full (might be different at the moment though!). The ferries are clean and have enough things to keep you occupied for the duration.

Newhaven is a complete dump, but Dieppe is quite lovely, but a fair drive out of the town centre before you reach motorway.

Newhaven - Dieppe is fine if a bit slow. Newish ferries which are ok and it's generally fairly cheap.

It's never really that busy though I understand even they sold out last week!

Going myself next Thurs, in a 49 year old Renault 4... Cheap and basic, suits me well.

Its fairly significantly loss making and has been for years. The French regional departments subsidise it to the tune of several million €€€€€s.

Maybe I was mixing up Dover-Dunkirk with Newhaven-Dieppe :?

If you happen to decide to go into the war memorial at whichever one I was at, it's up the hill, don't be tempted to hop over the low wall for a wander round if the gate is locked. Entry is free but there's a fucking big guard dog in there and it'll wait until you're right inside before giving chase. You'll be by the memorial in the middle of the square by that point and climbing up it is your closest point of refuge for a few seconds while the dog runs round the back where it can also get in. I suggest you then jump over the edge and sprint as fast as you can to the far wall and jump over. It's a big drop on the other side but it's a corn field so you shouldn't hurt yourself.
