pogweasel Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 So, there's this old car.... I would like to buy it... but the VIN plate is missing, there's no docs and it hasn't turned a wheel in DONKEYS. Can I get the V5 without a chassis number? And without a VIN plate is it going to be impossible to ensure tax exemption? It's pre-72 and clearly so (not a ringer or dodgy in any way) though some work will be needed before road use...Worth bothering?
Timewaster Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 Sounds like a big ball ache to me. It would have to be something special.Couldn't a reg check (hpi or similar) give you the chassis number? I could probably help you out with that. That is assuming it has a registration number. This could also proove the tax exempt status. So go on then.. tell us more!
bigstraight6 Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 Tell us more Pog, is it something really rare and tasty! missing vin plate aside, could it possibly have the chassis number stamped on it somewhere?
Torsten2001 Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 If it has a number you may be able to get the chassis number from the pre 1974 local records, come on, tell us!
pogweasel Posted January 24, 2009 Author Posted January 24, 2009 Nothing exciting at all really. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0322101941 '63 SWB Land Rover Went to view it this morning, ripped canvas, flat perished bald tyres, rotten rear crossmember, presumed siezed 2.25 lump and more spiders webs than you can shake a stick at. Otherwise it is complete, the rest of the chassis looks OK apart from needing hammerite, the bits that normally rot haven't, and it looks salvagable under 10 years+ of barn dirt. Local enough to make it easy to get. Though it's gone over what I wanted to pay now.... doubtless plate-rapers and ringers are on the case! Though they may have a shock when they find out there's no docs or VIN, as the old boy said no-one else has viewed or asked sensible Q's... I'll expect a call next week then.
Pillock Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 Should you be concerned that the VIN plate is now attached to some 80's Land Rover, giving it tax exept status, and when you try to register this one the DVLA will get all arsey about there being two identical cars?Obv. legally you're in the right, and it'll just show up the owner of the other one to be a ringing git, but it still might be mega hassle.
Albert Ross Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 GO for it. I bought my V5 less Vin plateless 109 in 2004. I sent off for the V5 and it came back as mine! It didnt need sorning due to the amount of time it had spent off road (lol) It was used on a private site for approx 8 years and then dumped in a shed until 2002/3 ish. It was put out to tneder and left in the open for a year. It started with a fresh battery and driven onto a trailer, and was sold on the 'bay to me, and that was in 2004. I only just got it on the road, and that's on a brand new Richards chassis, as the original was broken in 3 places, and twisted. MOT's aren't an issue for me................I do em meself. Get it or I shoot the puppy!

garethj Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 All the best people have Land Rovers When I registered my old VW from Sweden I took it to the local DVLA office close to MIRA, they were helpful when they inspected it. Worth a phone call to them?
