Bangernomics top 10

So what do people think of the cars on the list? I have also taken on board what they say about petrols possibly being cheaper in the long run than diesels as they require less maintenance and are cheaper to buy as less popular. It would probably suit my driving too as I tend to do lots of shorter journeys rather than a long commute so a petrol might be more efficient.

Off the top of my head I can't think of many people who are realistically better off with a diesel, when you weigh it all up.

I do bangernomics ok but I'm a stickler for preventative maintenance. That said if you get a good car it's worth spending money keeping it good.

I was polishing my turd this evening. I mean, cleaning my Nippa - or is that even worse? Anyway, found a bloody car door dent in one of the rear doors. Yes, I know it only cost £300 to buy the entire car, but it still pissed me off. It's certainly why I can't bear to spend vast sums on cars, and why if I actually manage to restore the 2CV, it certainly will not be to showroom condition.

I like old diesels because they burn anything, coal dust, lard, crude oil, and they just require electricity for the glow plugs and stop solenoid. Agree with "what is point modern diesels".

The list containing 3 Rovers and a Land Rover indicates a certain AR bias and/or a lack of wider knowledge or interest. I suspect the list would contain more VAG products if it had been compiled by e.g. a dubber site.

They have only included cars with a British connection.

Ah OK, fair enough.

Although you could argue that VW owed its post-war existence to Major Ivan Hirst, REME ;-)

Not sure, aren't a lot of Fords developed in the UK? The Vauxhall Omega is tenuous too, with its Ellesmere Port built engine.

F reg austin metro vanden plas auto bought from a so called friend who assured me it was good and only playing up as it was stood cost me 650,spent nearly 300 on it then lost will to live and lobbed it on ebay. Sold for £400

Ford escort on a m plate. Bought for £200,blew up on way home so I dumped it for last owner to collect and received nothing back.

Vauxhall corsa envoy, bought for £230 spent 200 on it then the axle rotted out. Sold for £100.

X plate punto. Bought for £280,spent £150 on it and sold for £140

V plate xsara. Bought for £250,spent £190 on a rear axle, probably due a clutch soon, need to service, change cambelt and waterpump and replace 2 Abs sensors so needs about another 200 spent on it. The xsara isn't going any bloody where. It's comfy, economical and very tidy overall. All this is from November last year so I've lost a lot of money. The xsara isn't worth the money I am going to spend but I think the car is worth it. Am i doing something wrong or us this the correct way?!

I shouldn't have bought the metro but heart ruled head there, the escort showed no signs of anything wrong when I test drove it but just threw a hissy fit 10 mile from buying it. I bought the corsa quick as I needed to get to work the next day and the punto was just being Italian!

^ You're showing another reason why most of us can't do bangernomics properly: making excuses for them and forgiving them anything :-)

I don't see them as excuses, more valid points mate! Sickening when I know I'm skint and yet I've lost over a grand in less than a year!

Still have a car I own in my own name and I'd have spent more than what I've lost in about 8 months of finance payment and still have another 4 years at least to keep paying
