Historic vehicle car tax

Does anyone have any knowledge of how to register a car for Historic vehicle tax?

I had to get the Beetle on an age related plate instead of a Q plate after a lot of faffing and now its roadworthy need it taxed but don't want to pay.

On DVLA it comes up as £145 for the year but being a G plate (69) it should be free.

is it as easy as a form or does it get more complex and Involve a trip to Peterborough to see an official?

Tick box on V5C, take to local post office to tax, they will issue historic non-tax disk* and send off your V5C to DVLA. wait a couple of weeks for them to send it back. Job jobbed.

Initially you need to change the tax classification of your vehicle from Private/Light Goods (PLG) to Historic. You can do this in person at a Post Office that deals with Vehicle Tax. You’ll need to fill in your current V5c as detailed below and take a valid MOT certificate with you.

In section 7 of your current V5C, Changes to current vehicle, fill in the section marked Taxation Class. Write 'HISTORIC' in the boxes provided in black pen using block capital letters. Then sign in section 8.

If for any reason the Post Office are not able to transact then a postal application will need to be made direct to the DVLA Swansea SA99 1DZ. You’ll also need to obtain and fill out form V10 ‘Application for Tax’ and send in addition to the completed V5c and MOT certificate.

Fill out the V10 putting your personal details in section 1 then fill in detail about your car and new taxation details in section 2. Write 'HISTORIC' in the 'Taxation Class You are Applying For’ section.

And that’s it !

If you applied at the Post Office taxation should be instant.

If you apply direct to Swansea you’ll need to wait for confirmation before the car is taxed. Unless the car is already taxed you’ll need to wait for confirmation before driving the car on the road.

Either way you’ll receive an updated V5c showing the new HISTORIC taxation class within 4 weeks.

When I registered my Capri as tax exempt it was a right ball ache! No one at two post offices knew how to do it either!

I filled in my V5 log book, in the changes section write in taxation class: Historic vehicle.

Then I had to fill in a V10 application for vehicle tax form.

Then take all that (and your insurance and mot certificates just incase) to a post office branch that handle car taxation (not all do). They will then do some poking around on their computer thing at the till and should be able to give you a years free tax, the V5 then needs signing and they post it to DVLA for you.

Some weeks later I got a confirmation of tax letter and receipt through the door from DVLA. If it's worked the receipt should say 12mths tax at £0, as mine did. Then your new V5 with the changed taxation class should follow later. I'm still waiting for mine!

I must have spent a good hour in the post office trying to get this done. It's almost a deliberate pain so nobody bothers trying! Non of the cashiers new how to do it, it was phone the boss and trying various things for me before it worked on their computer.

I tried doing this by only filling in the changes on the V5 then posting to DVLA. I got it back a month later with a letter saying they can't do the changes without a V10.

Edit: link for V10 form.
