Scrap Prices?

Sorry for the poor quality of pics I wasn't planning on posting them. The photos don't really do the rust justice. Inner sills rusted and detached from the floor and outer sill on both sides, floor rusted door skins flapping. The outer sills don't looks too bad due to plenty of bondo.

The chap I got it off was only the second owner, the car had originally been a personal import from Belguim before it became fashionable and had a plate under the bonnet stating 'no manufacters warrenty'

One that dodged the crusher / oval. 1500 auto that was offered for disposal a few years back as it was generally knackered and the ring-gear finally gave up completely. It was passed on to my mate who with his son did a really good job on it, won a few trophys at shows.

Ah, memories. My dad had a mk2 auto estate (which might have been a 1500 or a 1600 X-Flow) back in the late 70s that suffered from chocolate ring gear syndrome.Interesting story on that Sierra. Wonder if it would have ended up so rusty if it had been a German-built one (I think that it was mainly UK-supplied Ghias that were Cologne-built).

The Sierra was clearly rusty while still in use but really it got hold whilst parked on grass, real car killer when it gets wet.My earliest memory of Cortinas is Mark 1s being continually cranked over on a cold morning, plenty of battery but no go, funny what you remember. We had an S-Type so were filling up green shield stamp books like they were going out of fashion and then they did.

That's exactly how my dad described the problem! Drove him mad - or must have done, anyway, as he chopped it in for a Marina and then really learned about poor build quality...

I weighed in 2 dead car engines and 3 batteries this morning, 220 kg apparently and I got £30. That must make an average car worth £120-140? I did see a notice saying they charge £5 per tyre disposal fee though, seems like good money for just taking em round the corner and chucking them in the Nene.

Used to be the case that you got a lot better price for engines or 'heavy' but then the car prices went made. How do they price the barreries (unit or weight) curious because I must have 10 or so dud ones and was thinking they were worthless. Thanks

Many Thanks Andrew; that's better that nothing.

Does the receipt not give the price/ton for these?

Batteries are usually done by weight, according to Letsrecycle about £80 as ton at the moment.

Thanks M'Coli, I have heard of some places paying per Battery (up to £3)but that was before it all went pear shaped. Funny enough I did a Ton of Batteries and got £80 in 1989 two trips in my Tranny Mini Bus, mostly truck batteries.

Ive had to steal another few bits off the red probe to get mine through its test so I've decided just to bin it next week sometime.I dont think its worth repairing when i dont need it anyway, and the interested parties seem to have gone quiet so i think ill just weigh it in.£100 paid for the car, plus prob another hundred odd for an exhaust, £50 to put it through a test, trying to find replacements for the bits ive pinched and then whatever else it fails on, and they're only fetching 300-400 with a ticket and rent on fleabay.

Got to be worth saving as much as you can easy more than pay for itself in the long run, always feel happier with a spare car tucked away. When I had a Xantia it was a absolute Godsend getting a bitser off ebay for £80.

What's the Bobby Moore with scraping a shell without the V5? Totally above board honest  We have just stripped a car for parts but only have the old style V5 which is literally not worth the paper it's written on I'm led to believe...Anyway rang the local scrappie to come and pick it up and he said they would need the V5 (upto date style one) then we would need to fill out a destruction form? Are they all like this or do most scrap yards just take cars no questions asked?

Posted

I don't think its a case of no questions asked, more like arse covering. They (scrapyards) don't want a load of agg fom taking in iffy motors. Best thing is be totally up front to why there are no docs then its down to how honest your face is. If you can give details of the registered keeper because by rights they should send off the main part of the V5 if they aren't actually doing the scrapping. In my experience DVLA would rather get there records straight than hassle people

Got a shell to dispose of? No paperwork? Metal yards being jobsworths?

Got a question, as PRI bangers seems to have imploded are we expecting to see a team of 10 rated drivers turn up at tracks at random and race against individuals in what is really an solo event ? Or are they just taking part at team meetings?

...huh??

Maybe the oval boys know, stick a post up on oval banger chat asking how they dispose of their stolen cars after theyve raced 'em! ha ha ha(the above is a joke BTW)

The annoying thing is if they are adament about a V5 and you got the car legit but the seller doesn't send their bit off you can still get a new V5 but it cost you £19. Some yards will take the buyers bit but best to have the keys as well.

Posted

If you've got no V5, I would have thought that if you take some credible photo ID along like your driving licence or something, that will satisfy them that theyre not buying something dodgy. i imagine theyre worried about these pikey bastards that go round hiab-ing gear off folks driveways and weighing it in in.

Posted

It is normally photo ID and V5 if they don't know you. The yards are probably getting regular checks from the police and don't need the hassle.

Sorted. Well I hope so! Scrap yard near me has said just bring it to them without the docs and I have to deal with the paperwork. There is also an ad in the local rag for a place in Northwich who's advert reads "no paperwork required".

Looks like there is no need for a Victor Meldrew.......

Phoned henry grays scrappy today and they are paying £100 for drive in so thats the plan i reckon.

Feel a bit of a git though as it really isnt a bad motor, but nobody seems to want.

Ah its natural selection isnt it, not much point keeping it unless you like it and if nobody else does then might as well cash in while the metal prices are half decent. Is there no demand from the sort of people who'll chuck it in for a few laps round Racewall first?
