Tick... Tick... BOOM!

Press button very hard and the windows will likely work; the switches get gummed up. You can dismantle them and clean them out.

This morning, when the rain finally stopped, I tried pressing the buttons a bit harder.  Success!  Windows down; windows up.  No problem.  I've done nothing to it over the weekend, in fact after coming in from work on Saturday I didn't move it until this morning.

Worryingly, it didn't want to start upon leaving work (and before I fiddled with the windows).  The remote unlocked the door fine, turn the key and the dash and radio came up, then that last little bit... light clicking from somewhere in front of me.  I tried rolling it down the ramp to the road, which ought to be steep enough for a bump-start; nothing.  So I nipped over the road and borrowed a jump pack from Martin at the garage, success.  Bit of an Italian tune-up on the way to Asda, but I had my heart in my mouth when I'd loaded the shopping and needed action.  It started.  Thank goodness!  Next question is, will it start again at 6am?  Watch this space...

Any thoughts?  Battery required, perhaps, or just a good blast to charge it up?

I would wing it until the next time it fails to proceed. If you have another issue in the next week or so, just lob a new battery on.

That is pretty much what I was thinking.  I'll be stopping for petrol (first fill!) on the way to work tomorrow, assuming it's started at home, so it'll be interesting to see what it does then.

EPIC FAIL!  I went for petrol this morning and... forgot to take a snap.  I must most humbly apogolise and fling myself upon the collective mercy of the assembled Shiters.  Workmate Rob phoned me this morning while I was on my rounds to tell me my alarm was going off, but by the time I got back to the bakery it had stopped.  When I got in to go home, no life in the starter, so I bumped it using the steep ramp down to the street.  I've now looked in the handbook (yes, I've bought a car that actually still has the handbook!) and found a switch I didn't know about, which turns some of the alarm-monitoring on or off, one of the functions being a tilt sensor.  Our car park isn't level, so if this has been "on" all this time that could be the problem.  I'll fiddle with it tomorrow and see...

Well the sensor switch seems to be doing its job, although it's a bit of a faff remembering to turn it off every time I park.  However... starting is still an issue, especially so at 6.15 this morning in the lashing rain. Rrruh... rruh... rruh...click... click... you know how it goes.  Duly fed up with it (doesn't take me long, does it?) I took the Wheelchair Bus to work and picked up a lovely new battery on the way home.  Upon attempting to fit it, I discovered the battery clamp is hidden at shelf level in the battery box, so you need a 13mm socket and an extension bar to undo it.  Naturally I only had a combination spanner in that size, what a lot of fun* that was.  I so miss having a driveway...

Anyway, new battery installed, radio coded, let's see what it does tomorrow.  It's actually a nice car to drive, so I'd kind of like it to worm its way into my heart.  Oh shut up, poor deluded fool.

I saw this Astra in an alley while walking the dog and just had to come back with the car.

Next, here we are at work...

The other one is Rob's (rob-vipzer here) which he traded his Carisma against.

And finally at home...

The silver one is the 2004 diesel that lives at no. 4.

In other news, the new battery did the trick and it now starts beautifully.  I might have a little blow in the exhaust somewhere but I'm not going to worry about that until MoT time, if I even keep it that long.  It's competent, but boy is it dull.  Oh and I can't open the rear doors, not that I need to.

Yesterday I put petrol in this car, for only the second time.  It'll be the last...

I owed you a PSS!  Debt paid.  I worked out it's giving me about 29mpg, which I didn't think was too bad considering all it really does is my little commute.

I only just realised the implication of an earlier post in this thread. Taff is Lenny Henry's dad! Did the Queen know this before awarding the knighthood?
