good call by Piper there, you could easily spaff the cost of a course on on years MoT welding.

The cost of the course is money you will see back year after year, mate. Just learn to weld strong & safe.

Welding is one of those things that it's better to have 1-1 instruction rather than reading about it or watching a youtube video.  I was taught as part of my HND course and having a knowledgeable bloke standing behind you to tell you what's going wrong and why will save you hours of guesswork and fiddling.  If not from a college course, can you find a friendly mechanic to show you how for a few hours and fifty quid in his pocket?

Once you get a feel for it and you've understood how wire diameter, feed and current all work you can set up your own welder and practice.

Then you can learn about the specifics of welding up old cars, but that's mainly about when your inner voice says "yes, that metal should be clean enough, that'll probably be alright" you need to take your inner voice to the back of the garage and give it a good shoeing.  Metal is only clean enough to make a good weld when it's really clean.  And you need to clean the bit where the MIG earth clamp connects.  The metal needs to be so shiny you'll be proud to look at it, but the reality of welding old cars is that you sometimes have to cut away quite a lot to get to metal that's thick enough and  isn't pockmarked like a teenager's face.
