DVLA Help required

Ok so I've tried calling them a couple of times but their lines are busy so thought I'd tap into the vast knowledge on here while I wait.

I sold a car 5 weeks ago and duly posted off the V5 in order to change the owner and more importantly get my 6 months outstanding tax back. Schoolboy error I just sent it be normal first class post whereas I would normally send stuff like this recorded.

The long and the short of it is I've still had nothing back, either a confirmation letter that I am no longer responsible for the vehicle (which DVLA say I should get within 4 weeks) or a nice cheque for the tax.

The same time I sent this I also sent of the V5C for the new car I bought and got the new V5 back 2 weeks ago so would seem odd if one letter got lost and the other didn't.

My main concern is that I made sure that I sent it off before the end of Feb (27th) to maximise the tax I got back, it's now into April so if the thing has got lost I've probably just paid 2 months of tax for nothing.

https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ shows the car as still being taxed but I know that's not necessarily fully up to date.

Any advice / words of encouragement?

Get on the phone. Ts the only sensible answer, sadly.

Also, form may have gone astray but the date you signed it/sold the car should still be the main factor.

Hopefully it will all sort itself out and you wont be out of pocket,,,

(but then again it is the DVLA)

Cheers

I just don't trust the DVLA so send everything recorded or get a proof of posting from the post office. Since doing this nothing seems to go astray. They will probably tell you that you have to wait at least 6 weeks before complaining that they have lost it.

Indeed - as expected I've been told to phone back when it's been 6 weeks. Oh well...

They really are fucking useless.

I got my new V5 yesterday, slip to say the old car ain't mine any more and presumably will get the refund on Sat morning, but 3 sets of envelopes and postage? I know they'll have the Sinclair Spectum handling the V5s, BBC Micro doing the not yours slips and a Commodore PET doing the refunds, but what a waste of public money when timesed by however many cars change hands a year!

Also it means, naturally, my cheque is the one that isn't here, the one I'm most interested in!

Civil Service and None Value Added shock.

It's not like they have competition and need to get rid of the waste.

...which is hopefully also the date the new owner taxed it (which will confirm the date he says he sold it if the old V5C has gone AWOL and he has to write to them)? ;)

As a matter of course now i take a copy of any form i send to the DVLA and proof of posting from the PO. You only have to prove you sent it not that they received it. No arguments then, There is no point sending anything recorded to the DVLA as they will not sign for anything so you cannot get proof of delivery.
