Acquaintance involved in a hit and run... By off-duty police officer - What should he do?

It is perhaps the most stupid development in the world of road markings. "Let's take the slowest vehicles and give them a stop area right in front of the fastest traffic." And it creates angry scenes like that. It's the same story with road markings at traffic lights where there are two lanes, that immediately go into one lane the other side of the junction. Why don't these people have some common sense when designing road layouts?

Erm... Now I am showing my ignorance/stupidity...

..but...

...what is that box for then?

Isn't the point of them to put the cyclists in front of the cars?

You are showing neither.

As others have said it has to be one of the more stupid schemes and seems to serve to increase conflict

The first Cycle Boxes round here (indeed the first ones I ever saw) appeared after a weekend when I was doing a job for Ryobi in Carrickfergus. A few of the younger staff asked me WTF they were about. Not knowing myself, I took the initiative and phoned the Police. First of all they didn't know where I was talking about, secondly they didn't know what I was talking about before thirdly and finally admitting that they didn't know anything whatsoever, and suggesting that I contacted the Dept of Environment Roads Service.

Stay classy, PSNI D Division.

I should point out that maybe my views should not be taken seriously (on any subject)..........unless you want to.

They are a daft idea. Locally there's a one way (for vehicles) bridge with traffic lights in case any cycles come the other way. Which is about once every 47 bleeding years.

I suppose when you think about it, you can easily see why drivers get pissed off about these things, but in the majority of cases the vast majority of cyclists haven't actually asked for them, it's some 'right on' nut case at the council, obsessed with anti-pollution etc. So don't blame all cyclists.

I think the idea of them is that the cyclists are in front where they can easily be seen, the alternative is to have them wobble up the inside between kerb and wing mirror where they can get crushed a bit too easily.  I've had some dog-slow cars in my time, but none of them has been so slow that I can't pass a cyclist safely.  Obviously brand new white Audis lack the neck-snapping acceleration of a 1200cc Beetle with a flat spot below 3000rpm, Series 3 Land Rover with flattened cam lobes etc.

Or, people should get a fucking grip and accept that being held up for 5 seconds driving their car really isn't the end of the world.
