Shiter's hybrid fix

FDB I thought it was a love in for fixing a $4000 fault for $10 and up yours main dealers and your undiyable tech.

Yes, I know, I know - but there's nothing more annoying for me than people praising modern electric hybrid cars. I just don't think they're the answer at all.

I can see where you are coming from. The Insight is marvellous in how focused it is on being efficient. But, it's bloody stupid expecting to sell a car in volume that's of no use to a huge swathe of the population. Which is why the awful Pious actually sold better. It was actually a useful car.

I'm intrigued by both the Vauxhall Ampera and Mitsubishi PH-EV though. I really need to put one of those through its paces. Vauxhall have said I can try one next time I'm in Luton. HELPFUL.

One thing that does annoy me is wildly inaccurate mpg figures the makers tout about to sell them although this is not confined to hybrids. A mag floating around at work had a BMW i8(?) on test, it averaged 30 something mpg while they had it, the makers sell them on 130 mpg. Same mag also had a diesel Golf on test, 43mpg over a few days against claimed 75mpg. Fraud in any other world.

Amperas are better than some, you could argue - except they're unnecessarily fast I'd say. A smaller engine and the economy would be miles better. I think there's the problem of the first of a type setting the public perception in stone, so manufacturers make sure they're faster than needs be.

The Renault Zoe is ok - fast enough and fuss-free. And no hassle having two or more different forms of propulsion. Trouble with this car is that in most of the EU, you're forced to rent batteries at a punative rate. Apparently not the case if you buy in Norway.

Come 2035 I can foresee a white bearded DW piloting around the peoples Republic of Wales in a Twizzy cobbled together with jump leads and scrapyard tractor batteries.

Tesla Model S surely wins the prize for unnecessary pace? Imagine what the range could be if they stopped it delivering 400+bhp on demand. Problem is, it's very hard to ignore that sort of oomph, even if you're me.

What did you do with the oomph, having failed to ignore it DW? Do the usual cheap thrills fast as I can from 30-80 or drive it maturely, using the excess power to pilot a road surreptitiously quickly?

At least it's a sports car, not a Vauxhall saloon. But I agree, so much speed wears off quickly unless you can't drive properly.

I'd have Tesla like a shot if I could afford one and I had off road parking to charge the bugger. I think they look great and the thought of tear arsing around in something silent while waving the ecology flag really appeals!
