Dirt cheap to run shite - suggestions?

How about the Peugeot 106 with the 1100cc engine? My wife's "R" reg one has just been sold on & was returning way over 50mpg when pushed. Driven gently could return 60mpg and was comfortable, quick, had 5 gears and could handle the weekly Waitrose run. A bloody good little car and easy to fix!

Having read the start of the thread, I reckon a corsa or a 106 are going to be your best options.

Would recommend avoiding 323F due to surprisingly expensive / hard to find parts.  The PH answer I believe is an MX5, and I can vouch that they're remarkably tough and cheap to run - only 30MPG being the only downside I can think of if you're happy with two seats and a leaky roof. And the image.

Astra B? Puma?

Im utterly astounded how much they want for this Pogweasel edition diesel AX. My old shit heap must be worth millions by now.

Lucas pump, but mine gave 30K miles on a mixture of any old shit shoveled into the tank including petrol/diesel mix

Pretty sure the 1.4 variants are now extinct due to OMG HGF

No one has mentioned the Peugeot 205.  My son has had several.  The non turbo diesels are very hard to break and generally soldier on until 200k with only suspension lower arms and driveshafts needing replacement - parts are cheap and the whole car is easily maintained at home.  Avoid any that have worn rear suspension bearings.  For an elderly diesel, they are quite refined and quiet inside, do 55mpg easily and seem happy to cruise flat out at 90mph.  They resist rust extremely well, unlike escorts and fiestas.

His last one was sold, working perfectly, last year.  The very pretty 70,000 mile Xsara diesel automatic which replaced it failed after 3,000 miles, needing a new autobox.  Apparently Citroen and Peugeot autoboxes of that era like to give up expensively at around 70,000.  He now runs an Alto, bought brand new, and loves it.

It's tidy but with 100k on the clock there's not way it's worth that kind of money. And those seats! I have migraine now.
