my next big mistake. Have your say!

Ok I will admit there are a lot of poor Cadillacs out there. A sts for a grand has to be better than an x type though surely? And cheaper to run than a x300 or xj40.

I had a 2.0 diesel S as a company car for 18 months and loved it. I suffer from back trouble with poor seats but found them great in this, despite me having the base model with no lumbar support. The seating position is low but you get used to it. I had the facelift model so last of the line which were much improved over the earlier versions.

Regularly returned over 50mpg, you can hear the engine around town but it's silent at motorway speeds. Definitely a car that's happier on the open road.

Ah, the GM J type.

A new front-wheel drive car was introduced on 26 August 1981,[14] again using the same underpinnings as the Opel Ascona - this time the Ascona C. On its launch, it offered class-leading levels of fuel economy and performance which had previously been unthinkable for this sector of car. Sales began towards the end of September.[15]

This model was part of GM's family of compact "J-cars", along with the Ascona, the Australian Holden Camira, the Brazilian Chevrolet Monza, the Japanese Isuzu Aska, and the North American Chevrolet Cavalier, Pontiac Sunbird, Buick Skyhawk, Oldsmobile Firenza, and Cadillac Cimarron.

There are people in the mk2 cavalier owners club, who dream of this shite. (I knew a bloke called rabbit who had the Holden Camira in Estate Varient)  Madness. It's amazing when you see the way the American's managed to screw up the interior design.

I've got a 2.0d estate, not sure what spec, had it a year and it's never given a minutes bother. Got it cos I was needing an estate and it was the same price as same year vectras etc. I was doing 80+ miles a day in it, and was easily getting over 50mpg. Not really bothered about the image, but it is a wee bit different. According to the Guy who does my servicing, the 2.2 Ford engined ones are best avoided. Plenty of room for me and skis, snowboards, bike etc. I like it.

The chassis is probably the best part of the X type if its based on the Mondeo. It's the naff 20k for a jag pastiche thats fell out of fashion.

Years ago jags were bought by your company director/ professional types. When they started sticking the badges on Mondeos, it was akin to Rolex bringing out a £20 digital watch. Yes they would sell bucket loads but then the name would be devalued. That said they seem to be doing well at the moment.
