Help!! Volvo serpentine belt tool needed.

Recommended Posts

Posted

I tried to fit a new serpentine belt to the V70 yesterday.

No chance.

All I got was a bashed knuckle.

The tensioner on mine has the three quarter? size square hole in the middle.

I bought a three quarter socket adaptor, but even on its own, it's too long, there's not enough space between the tensioner and the ecu box.

Any Volvo lads on here got a tool I borrow or buy?

Anyone adapted something else to do the job?

I need this quickly as I'm off on holiday with the car in less than two weeks.

Also found I've got a slow puncture on a front wheel too, and my Mrs threw away the bowl I use for oil changes.

Not a good day was yesterday

There are a few methods for DIYing these tools, I've googled and can't find the instructions I followed when I replaced the PAS pump on my C70 T5.

Basically I used some heavy steel sheet (2.5mm probably) which I cut into a rectangle with 2 'ears' on the top, the rectangle needs to be just the right size to fit into the square drive diagonally (bench vice and grinding disc is your friend here) and then use vice grips or similar to twist once it's in. It's a bit fiddly but costs nothing.

A nail, splitpin or allen key can then be used through the small hole in the tensioner to hold it in place. Once it's fully pulled back it should line up with a hole in the backplate to lock it off.

One of our fitters knocked me a tool up tonight.

He had a 3/4 piece of square steel, so he cut a piece off of it and welded it to a length of flat bar. Going to try it tomorrow. Hopefully all will be ok.

Get your mate to knock up a load more of these tools and take them up to Scotland and sell them all....I've heard there are one or two Volvo owners up there.

This time next week you'll be a millionaire.
