Anyone want an M reg Astra 1.4?

My local scrap man just stopped by. Turns out he has a clean M reg Astra in white with 46,000 on the clock. He thinks it's a bit of waste to send it over the bridge. He wants £250 for it. Just out of T&T I believe. If any of you are interested, I'll try to find out more. He said he'd send me a pic of it later, so if he does I'll post it up.

It'd better be an LS model with the greyish cloth interior.

He's right it's a shame to scrap it, but sadly for £250 it's just far too expensive with no Mot-ley Crewe or rent.

May I just say that as the owner of an M reg Astra these are just about the most indestructible reliable economical cars ever made.

Mine has 116,000 miles, averages over 50 mpg (OK, I do long journeys at moderate speed - but I know I am right) and is comfortable and quiet.

It isn't a ball of fire, but it has no rust whatsoever and recently had its first admiring comment.

OK. I am doing my best to help here.  But it is all true :)  At 46K miles, if I needed a car, I'd be there.

Has it got a letter S on the gearstick or some sort of gate patern ?

I've no idea, I've not seen it personally. He hasn't got back to me about it yet either.

Having written off 3 mk3 Astra's, I'd happily NOT save it. However if someone wants a set of 14 inch alloys off an Arctic 8V, I have 4 standard ones with very shit tyres.

I'll take it for nowt or a packet of Jaffa Cakes ( the half price ones in Tesco).

It's a silly question anyhow, as if anyone wouldn't want a Mk3 Astra 1.4.

I got an untaxed, but mot'd mk3 for 200, I think 250 is a bit too high for that one.

There was a trade Cesaro down the road from me with MOT for 250 ono, just to give you an idea of how much they're worth now!

But is it? If it can be tested and rented for £400 or so, a clean low mileage Ashtray 111 1.4 would be a pleasant turd that would never go wrong and cost fuck all to run. With 46k on the clock it would run forever with the right care. Time to start saving this stuff before it's gone.

No surprise to some that I still have two mk3 Astras.  They originate from that nice time when cars were simple and rugged but still modern enough to stand up to any sort of everyday use/ abuse.

They cost nothing to run, are simple to repair and service and the 1.4 is in the cheap tax bracket.  If it's not rusty on the sills, I'd wager that it would probably either go straight through an MoT at those miles, or need silly little bits like a CV gaiter.  I put one of those on my GSi last month- it was £4 including a grease sachet  :-D

I never understand the concern about the exact price.  When you are down to that sort of level, condition is everything and with 46K on it, there is every chance that it will be decent.  The main question for me would be is in MPi (good) or SPi (run away).

(and a small chance that it did 46K in the first two years and has sat under a damp tree ever since - but these are so worthless that if the scrapman is making an effort we can be optimistic)

You wont get a more reliable car, they're effing brilliant things.
