Cheapness at Halfords

Recommended Posts

I got an email this morning about their current hot deals.

Some of their own brand oils are down to 12 quid for 5 litres (as opposed to 30 plus standard price) so it might be worth a splurge.

The 5w40 synthetic is good stuff - I think it's the same as Comma Syner-G. Comma make the Halfords oil and their stuff is pretty good.

Cheap oil is not always bad oil.

Comma oil is actually Esso oil, I used to do deliveries for Esso, and Comma, in Gravesend was one of our regular calls.

I always use Comma, it's good stuff.

Comma used to blend Mobil 1 oil so I dare say some technology transfer has accidentally made its way from the Mobil lab to the Comma lab.

A Brazilian concern owns them now, either way I see the Ginettas and Formula 2 cars racing about on Comma oil and they have no issues running on it.

I ran all my old cars on Comma oils without issues, it's good stuff that just suffers in the marketplace from not having a multi million pound marketing budget

I reckon Halfords are getting absolutely pasted by the likes of Euro Car Parts etc.  I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing  :?

Comma user here and no probs. Halfords, Europarts and the others need to learn to stack high and faff about less. The front of the stores should be for nice isles and accessories and the back half just filled to the roof with stuff and turn it over. Like a cash-and-carry.

Any oil that's not fake is fine.

If it says it's 5W30, it is. And with old oil that's kind of all you need to know.

If it's for a newer car just check specs. My VW needs 505.01 spec oil - Castrol for £45, I bought Petronas for £19. It absolutely has to be the same spec, otherwise they can't print it.

Was in there today and apart from the oil they had the normal tools at half price thing on (if only I could afford them)

Got a free bucket, sponge and shampoo though thanks to O2 priority :-)

If you have a Costco card they do the Castrol Edge (VW 504/507 spec) for 32 quid including the dreaded.....

Mobil 1 0-40 New Life and their Diesel equivalent both retail at 28 which are not bad prices at all. GTX is about 13 quid - I am sure it cost more than that back in 1992!

Otherwise AC Delco make good oil that meets all the VW specs and that's cheap too. Used that in my old Bini and it ran very nicely on that
