Depends on where you are looking for the information....

DVLA website can take a while* to update.

If you buy a motor and want to keep it on a SORN you have to print off the V890 form and post it to Swansea.

Here it is:

Yes, it's a right PITA, the system is designed to trip you up so they can hit you with the fines later.

SORN dies with owner change.

You cant SORN it until you get the V5c through in your name -and DVLA (In theory) will allow time for that.

SORN it on the new V5c -when it arrives.

If you cant  wait, send in a paper one using Proof of Posting , keep a copy & anticipate a war of words in a few months time.

My latest shows as tax expired Feb 2007, presumably it must have been SORN'd in the last 7 years but doesn't show up.

If it's been sorned in that time then the status would have been SORN, then SORN About to Expire, then it would revert to untaxed but with the original tax expiry date, not the SORN expiry date. Odd but that's what I've seen on mine. I wonder* if it's so the DVLA can hit you with maximum back tax?

Whatever the circs \(& there is some weird stuff coming out of Doovla right now) thay can only come at you for tax whilst you've owned it.
