Question for the SVM and other Ovlov pervs

Guys,

A friend has a 51 plated XC70 and asked me about updating his satnav. Apparently you need to install update discs for the in car system and he asked me where would be the best place to get them.

I know nothing about this, other than main dealers will rob you blind for the discs so does anyone know of a shiter friendly way to update matters?

I also believe that in some circumstances the update discs won't work on older systems but if anyone can shed any light on that, I'd be grateful. I would rather do some homework before suggesting he buys a cheap update from eBay and then finds it won't work. We know how these things can end don't we?

All advice/guidance/requests to piss off gratefully received!

Where is he? Might be worth seeing if there's a VIDA \ Sensus kitted specialist near him.
Will have a look on the VOC forum for you.

Update: Looks like only the main dealers have a subscription to VIDA Dice that updates the car's software. I'm having a look to see if any of that is pertinent to the sat-nav.

There seems to be two types of sat-nav - CD and HDD based. Do you know which one he has? Update discs turn up via the forum now and again, but you need to generate a code so that the disc can be read.

The only indy garage that seems to be able to do VIDA updates is Shark Performance.

VIDA is the hardware used by the Volvo dealer, Sensus is the software that runs the car systems, including the sat-nav.

I'd go hunting for update discs and codes on eBay.

He is based in Oxford - any suggestions would be very welcome Jon

I think you over-estimate the navigation technology used by the SVM. ;)

Bugger. Shark appear to be in Nottinghamshire. XC70s are miles out of my Volvo comfort zone. I'd be tempted to join the VOC Forum and ask the question, to be honest. I feel filthy for suggesting it, but if he wants the latest software he may have to drive some distance or go to a main agent. That must be tantamount to swearing on AS, equivalent to defecating on a V6 Tagora while wiping your backside with Scrappage twenties.

These guys appear to have diagnostic equipment, whether they can do software updates is another matter.

Good work Jon - I suggested to my mate he joins the VOC so I will suggest it to him again.

Oxford Volvo Servicing is a good call, I will send him the details. To be honest I have helped him out with stuff in the past but this is something I would prefer to leave to him to sort out!

I like the SVM navigation technology. Autoshite Essex tend to aim for the approximate location before leaning out the window and shouting "Oi mate, where's this Royal Albert Hall then?" Cheaper but highly inefficient especially if you happen to be in Leeds at the time

The advanced SVM navigation technique involves a dash mounted compass that always points slightly north-west.

I'd avoid the hairnet-endorsed break areas if I were you. I'm never gonna be able to live that down, given that it was on my former doorstep.
