Fiesta zetec clutch replacement

Despite only having 53 K on the clock my other half's 51 plate fiesta has suffered from a noisy clutch - noisy in neutral with the engine running - goes quiet when clutch pedal is pressed - i can only assume this is down to a previous giffer owner.

I have started a hear a "squeak" when drive is being taken up - i can only assume the release bearing is not long for this earth.

Anybody know the book time / rough cost for a clutch? It is a 1.25 zetec with aircon.

Noisy clutch release would normally be noisy when depressed, quiet when not. Pressing the clutch pedal brings the bearing in to contact with spinning clutch and puts pressure on bearing. Noisy in neutral then quiet when clutch depressed says input bearing on gearbox to me. Spinning when in neutral, stops when clutch depressed.

*I'm a big fan of putting new bearings in gearboxes rather than another gearbox. Not too difficult, fairly cheap and rewarding. Another box can be in the same state in a matter of months, or be as bad when fitted.

Geep is right in what he says but most modern ish cars have the thrust bearing in permanent contact with the clutch so it doesn't always seem to make sense. I've had a couple behaving like the one Been mentioned and it's been the thrust . Either way . Box out , about 4 hours for a clutch

I did consider that but surely the noise would continue when clutch is depressed wouldn't it? The squeak could well be release bearing and as you say, box out in any case so check bearing first.

Might be worth checking gearbox oil level as well.

Most of the gear oil will be down your back and shoulders anyway cos some fiestas and kaks dont have any drain plugs. Cheers Ford

Car drives fine - no whining or clonky gear change. No sign of fluid leaks either.

The Autodata I have says 3.20 hours, doesn't mention aircon though.

A bit of internet research seems to show that this is a common issue with the fiesta/ka/focus - lots of techs claim that there is a noise when in neutral.
