Living the dream

Within the last 12 months I've had a big change of direction/career change from being a constantly under pressure and stressed out sale rep, to getting a HGV class C licence and driving lorries, something I've wanted to do and indeed should have done years ago.

I was very lucky that I was given a job by one of Plymouth longest established transport companies initially driving 7.5 tonners on multi drop distribution work around Devon/Cornwall, with the promise I would be driving larger vehicles as soon as I passed the class C licence which I did in early October. Next day I was driving a 12 tonner and a few weeks later an 18 tonner.

I feel really fortunate being given this chance, which I think was partly due to me knowing and having dealings with the company owner during my time selling commercial vehicles about 12 years ago now, we always got on well and he could see I was very keen which goes a long way in his book.

The company runs a fleet of fairly mature lorries! mostly DAF's which are very on top of the job and reliable, my favourite drive are the Foden 18 tonners with a range change gearbox, once you master this type of gearbox you have a ratio for every situation and it's just so rewarding. This has been the best career move I've made, I enjoy every day and look forward to going into work, I just wish I'd done it years ago. Here's a few pics of what I've driven, Living The Dream!

I want to get my Class C licence in the autumn, as I am really not enjoying my current job any more. Just need to book some time off to do the course.

T'is amazing how an HGV ticket can open doors, one day stuck in traffic on the M3 inna Pug 205 with the phone ringing next week in an Ex-soviet military truck on remote hillside near Osh after having spent a day or so in the VIP vodka bar at Bishkek airport.

Very well done in taking the plunge, you have done exactly what I would like to do and have always wanted to do. I drove a 7.5 tonner to St Ives in Cornwall from Stockport a few years age and thoroughly enjoyed it, I was in deep shock when I had to refuel the bugger.

A chap here at work has just handed in his notice to do the same thing, woke up this morning having turned 50 and said to himself he ain't doing this shite anymore, like me he can drive on his car license so now he's counting down the days till he is outta here.

Wish I had the balls especially as the kids are all grown up now and can support them selves.

Hats off to ya Sir!!

Good, you have got up the most difficult first rung of the ladder now it is possible to get to the second. T'is amazing how an HGV ticket can open doors, one day stuck in traffic on the A33 with the phone ringing next week in a tracked artic in Ethiopia (with Tanzanian plates). No secret, just get a reputatuon of being able to drive from A to B sucessfully without needing someone to hold your hand.
