There's definitely a bit of bull going on there. That blue Datsun 160J has certainly not been imported from Australia... apart from anything else they never sold them there! Also I have a pic of that car from donkeys years ago when it only had about 6000 miles on it. Not a bad price though

I believe it's referred to locally as 'blarney'...  ;)

An hour down the road from me, and the missus is working 6am -> 4pm Saturday... Hmmm...

WCPGW?

Very impressed that there are some seriously ordinary cars there.  Wonder if the owner is/was on this forum?

Posted

Those cars have been advertised for sale over the past 7 or 8 years at various times.

I think McBride is the chaps name.

I might pop down - The Corona appeals; Pre 1980, so no NCT & cheap road tax... (On white & yellows though, so possibly a couple of hundred € VRT to pay on top).

The XR4i is a honey too - '84 means cheap tax (30 years or older), and it looks smart on the Sierra / Granada wheels, but would prefer original pepperpots.

I can see both going for strong money, though - Even though all the cars appear to be covered in mould inside, which is at odds with the 'dry stored' description...

Since the 'auction' is not going to be held by a professional auction house, I'd imagine it turning into a right old farce.

Awaiting your report.

The Audi 100 and the Datsun 120Y Coupe are WINNAR in my book.

I iz hear...

Massive queues to get in - lots of trader types. Some of the stuff very rusty - some not so bad.

Corona's decent - just some rot on the boot edge where the trim's been removed. No battery / air cleaner in the car, but it looks like it might have got there under its own steam. Interior bog standard (down to radio), but rather damp & mouldy.

Was last on the road 2009, so shouldn't be too difficult to recomission.

Sadly, there's loads of hi viz / rigger boot types, with bulging wallets... I was going to sign on to bid, but fear there's little point...

Proper update & pics later!

Okay - Update, with REAL PICTURES (apologies for the poor quality - Badly lit barn / cars parked bumper to bumper / half of Co. Carlow out for a Saturday jolly).

Being without Irish wheels at present, I had to invest a whole Ã¢â€šÂ¬22 per day to hire some modern French chod to get down to the Auction, just over an hour south of Dublin.

(Lovely)

Uneventful trip down into culchie-land, and spotted the venue via a nice hand-sprayed "CAR AUCTION TODAY" sign on the back of a HIAB.

Having squeezed the Clio into the car park (it was an absolute free for all), I was met with this:

Auction-1-2_zpsc7351f0b.jpg

Promising...

I arrived at 10:30 (doors opened at 09:00, auction started at 12:00), and it was busy, but not as mad as it got later. Around 80 cars / trucks / horse drawn carts, parked nose to tail in columns - Majority were non-driving, so it was a static auction, with the crowd moving from lot to lot.

Lots of dusty 'barn finds' - And a lot of cars which appeared to be generously smeared with filler and hand painted (the two sherpa coupes near the entrance were a great example).

When things did get going, it was a tad chaotic - Auctioneer on a raised platform, with a 1960's boom box and microphone... Very difficult to hear to begin with, but I tuned into him eventually. The 'catalogue' was two photocopied sheets of A4 containing the same Excel spreadsheet from the link Junkman posted.

While I understood there to be 'no-reserve', a couple of lots didn't sell after dropping the start price and getting no bids at the lowest figure he was prepared to commence bidding at.

A heated argument broke out, as the catalogue had a typo (lot number 35 repeated twice), which led to him auctioning the same lot twice, with quite different results...(!)

Everything seemed very expensive to me - I'd went along with the mandatory Ã¢â€šÂ¬200 deposit which you needed to lodge to register to bid, but decided against it... All hammer prices were plus 5% commission, AND VAT (21% in Ireland).

I'm sure the more experienced AS auction-goers will snort with derision at my tightness, but based on what similar (MOT'd) cars are going for on eBay.co.uk, I do think some lots were a tad salty.

Anyway - Enough waffle...Pictures...(Prices in GBP including commission & Irish VAT, converted at Ã¢â€šÂ¬1.2 to £1)

The very nice 160J - Still on UK plates

Auction-20_zps3c557009.jpg

£4620

This 1974 120Y was the polar opposite - Crusty, dodgy paint and a tow rope still attached

Auction-5_zps4d1d8158.jpg

£1575

1966 Zephyr

Auction-7_zps9e653168.jpg

£2415

Tidy, older resto VX4/90

Auction-13_zpsb183e6bc.jpg

£3780 (seemed not a bad price)

1979 Sherpa Camper - Generally rotten all round, especially around the scuttle & screen

Auction-11_zps11c15096.jpg

£525

1968 Jaaaaag XJ6 - Crusty and covered in bird shit

Auction-22_zps9282fff4.jpg

1976 Escort Mk2 Van - Hand painted white, and full of pog...

Auction-25_zps6b06403b.jpg

£2152 - Seems cheap, given the scene tax?

This 1978 Mk1 Cav seemed solid... Ding in the passenger door, dodgy black bonnet and lowered MX5 wheels, but worth saving - I half wish I'd chucked a bid in for it.

Auction-23_zps6f3f4ae4.jpg

£1050

This Skoda Octavia was a no-sale, with no bids at Ã¢â€šÂ¬2000... Seemed cheap around that price, as it was restored and very clean, bar a ding in the boot lid

Auction-16_zps0e6f55fc.jpg

(A similarly restored Standard 10 made just £2310, and looked mint - Bargain?)

Highest sale was a Series 3 E Type V12 - Huge dent in the roof (looked like a 500kg bag of building sand had been dropped on it) - Made £17850...(!)

BV72's Audi 100 was among the cheapest at £525 - But was rotten as a pear.

This 1984 XR4i seemed reasonable value - Had been painted, but looked to be an okay job.

 Auction-9_zpsb70c45ef.jpg

£1890

Finally, the Corona I came to see, and wanted to buy...

Auction-3_zps63f3483d.jpg

Auction-4_zpsc0e5a3f1.jpg

Auction-14_zps32b59331.jpg

Definitely a 20 footer - On closer examination, there was plenty of brush marks / overspray on the rubbers. The OSR arch had been crudely welded / filled with pog, and was starting to disintegrate - Somebody had a poke with a screwdriver, with evidence on the floor...

Auction-15_zpsbe3c7f2c.jpg

The interior was completely original, down to the radio - But stunk of damp (I sat in it for 5 minutes, and can still smell the damp on my jacket).

Despite all this, I really did fancy it - If it'd went for £5-600, I'd have been all over it...Even at £800, I'd have thought about it.

Auction-19_zps79ee08b5.jpg

Final price was £1470... Too salty for me, on a car which needed x4 new tyres, brakes refurbed, engine tune & service, 101 suspension perishables replacing, interior removing and cleaning, attention to the rear arches / boot lid, and possible a VRT bill of £170 to register it over here.

Expect to see it soon on eBay wearing gold Wantabes with stretched tyres / having had a few coils chopped out its springs.

Till next time!  :-)

Thanks for the pics and prices,

Did consider going to this,

but glad I didn't now.

I lived the dream just by reading the narrative.

Great report - thanks. I hope at least one burger van was there to dispense tea and ecoli. These sort of auctions aren't the same without copious consumption of grease and sugar.

How much did the Mk2 Consul or Zephyr ute (next to the Octavia) make?

Any idea what the Chevette sold for?

The Shovette made Ã¢â€šÂ¬1512 / £1260 - And was by no means a minter...(!)

Massive queue outside the burger van (30+), so unfortunately I was unable to sample their wares...  :-P

The 1963 Zephyr Ute (an Oz import) looked very cool, in a patinated FASTNLOUDDOUSEITINCLEARCOAT way.

It went for £8400.

Another thought struck me - It's been a while since I was last at an auction, but is it common practice for punters to sit all over the wings / panels of sold cars, and rest / leave their cups of coffee and cans of coke all over the bodywork?

(Half a dozen punters leaning on the roof / boot of the car, and scrawling the figures onto the catalogue with a biro seemed a common practice too...)

Well spotted - Made £1785 all in...  :-)

It looks like not all of them went to Rosegreen straight away. At least not yet.

Rosegreen would appear to have shut its doors last year - No "SHAMWRECK" for this lot, unless it's OOP NORTH at Tullyroan or Aghadowey.

That Cavalier looks like £300 worth to me not £1050. Looks like some rare shiz but zero bargainz available

Absolutely agree - Lots of rumblings from the Irish motoring community of phantom / preferred bidders... Everything made x3 - x4 the estimate...(!)

Some quality bodgery as evidenced here:

Presumably thats the auctioneers or something, theyve got it advertised for the same price it made at auction? The whole thing seems pretty shady to me, as anyone would reasonably expect of a shite auction conducted in Ireland.
