The first ever motor race in Sweden, taking place on the ice of lake Mälaren in the winter of 1905. There was no wind for the ice yachts, so the competitors raced their cars.

As it's a decade to the month - June 1st 2014 to June 10th 2024 - since the thread was started, I thought I'd dump a folder full of b+w pics which had been festering there for ages...  apols if there are duplicatations of others'  (I know I've duplicated one or two I previously posted, but many have since vanished).

Best wishes to all who still follow the thread!

Not something I thought I'd ever see. What even is that?

What is all the crap on the floor and what even is it doing there. Hardly a pristine production environment either for the cars or the workforce.

This picture and the one below it show the difference between the Canley line and that at Mercedes in Germany.

The cars were to be driven 10 laps by the main event race drivers that included:

  • Richard Attwood
  • Derek Bell
  • Jack Brabham (retired in Lap 6)
  • John Fitzpatrick
  • Bruno Giacomelli
  • Dan Gurney
  • Phil Hill
  • Denny Hulme (retired in Lap 3)
  • Innes Ireland
  • David Kennedy
  • Stirling Moss (retired in Lap 2)
  • Marc Surer
  • Patrick Tambay (retired in Lap)
  • Roy Salvadori (retired in Lap 4)
  • John Watson (retired in Lap 1)

Bruno Giacomelli won the race.

  • Joe Wiedmer flew his PanAm Porsche into Dubai Airport to discover the only way to get his valuable Porsche to the track was by helicopter then mistakenly used the Porsche's Driver Protection Roll Bar to hook to the helicopter instead of the chassis lifting points. Porsche parted company with the helicopter during the lifting causing extensive damage to the Porsche. All night repairs got the car ready for race day.
  • Juan Manual Fangio suffered a heart attack during practice and spent two weeks in Dubai Hospital.
  • Lt Gen Dahl Khalfan Tami retired as Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police in 2013.
  • Major Saeed Khalfan became UAE Rally Champion and Chairman of Dubai Autodrome
  • Over 20 years elapsed before motor racing became a significant sport in Dubai with development of Dubai Autodrome and the now defunct A1 Grand Prix Series.

"The organizers and Arab sponsors were not pleased with the outcome. They had spent a huge amount of money on the track and getting the famous names from motorsport to come over and race.

Pretty much trashed in the race, the maintenance crews worked on fixing the CXs to race again for another 10 laps at the end of the event, but this time driven by local officials and military personnel."

Standard tyres, suspension and  engines not yet run in.  With the extra mass of a roll bar.  Ooof!

Some cracking pics there, @forddeliveryboy, thanks. The 60s? picture of a picnic site amused me with all the litter lying around!
