Motorcycle alarms - whats the point?

As the battery died on my busa i was somwhat surprised that the alarm was going after the battery had been removed - it has its own power supply built in that cannot be tampered with.

Even though the battery is kaput it is on charge still fitted to the bike - i cannot risk a voltage drop that sets the alarm off at stupid o' clock.

The alarm (datatool veto) is as old as the bike - i think it is a liability now, only good for flattening the battery.

There is a good video on youtube. - after removal from the bike the bastard refuses to die even after being immersed in a bucket of water - an attack with a BFO hammer curtails it's eagerness, but it is pulled from the bin later on trying to make noise.

It's like the jasper carrott volvo joke, when it comes out of the crusher the lights are still on.

Maybe datatool should be making aircraft black boxes.

I doubt that would work. Mine gave up after 1 pressure wash. Not much use of you are fishing it out of the sea.

I've had to get out of bed at 4am when mine decided to go off a couple of winters ago

Why 4am?

Because that's when the temperature was minus 12 degrees

The battery is ancient and when it gets cold it lets you know

The internal battery is about 5 or 6 little batteries shrink wrapped together, they are little 1.5v round things like alarm fob batteries stacked on top of each other

I hate alarms so removed mine, I set it to winter mode first to stop it taking a hissy fit.

had to connect 4 wires together as it also immobilises as well, this was the fun bit as you can see all wires are black :-D

Your insurance premium.

mine asked if bike had an alarm I answered it did but I removed it, policy price still unaffected as bike to old he said :-D

The Fireblade Datatool battery is about 14 years old but just hanging in, the zx10r alarm battery is 10 years old and still going strong

Theyre not bad really, I cant think of anything else where the battery lasts that long?

The immobiliser on my Vespa just used to run the battery down. It only took about 3 days too - ridiculous!

Mine on the c90 is just enough a deterrent to keep the thieving little scrotes away. If anyone wants your bike away in a van and they are determined they will have it regardless though.

The point of motorcycle alarms?

The same as car alarms. To drain your battery, trade upon your fears and make money for the manufacturers and installers. Oh, and possibly reduce your insurance premium, but don't bank on the latter.
