If by new shape you mean the 2007 onwards one that is impressive depreciation by even French large car standards. I'd have the coupe, better looking than the 407, although still fairly gopping compared to the 406.

 

Collectively, Renault have probably pissed something of the order of 10 billion euros down the drain with the Avantime, Vel Satis and Laguna 3. They've managed to completely fuck up the Espace as well.

I think this has got a lot to do with the credit crunch. Although new cars are selling well the universal availability of credit has taken a serious hit.

I also note that folk are starting to realise what a colossal vanity changing car for the sake of it is. The good sales of Dacia underline a change in attitude towards value being a virtue to advertise. Having said that the hideous ostentation of heaps of slug jizz like the Ecock from Landrover shows that chrome painted plastic still rools ok with the fleet brigade.

 

Certainly lack of affordable chod up here.

 

Xj40s have been in Virgo classic territory for a couple of years. 406s and 52 plate family cars have some serious bargains and 306 Tdi meridians are still often well under 400.

Volvo 240 in silly money Virgo classic now.

940 s and 850s total bargains if you can afford the petrol.

 

BX if you can find one has to be the user shite investment buy a good one for 300 and look after it use it and hold on to it. There are so few left they will be the GS of the future as classic shitroen ownership gets more expensive as the CX is rare and the XM complex. Already very popular in European chod circles. Look at prices for a Visa ffs! Ok it has the awesome drum dash control module but the BX is a much better bet for a usable chevron.

 

Trust yer uncle dicky. ..get yer self a BX...not that I own one at present but I do have a CX and am soon collecting an XM..

I like the BX. I was going to say they're the last Citroen I enjoy seeing out and about, then I remembered I like the Xantia. So the BX is the second to last Citroen made that I like. I agree; the BX has a touch of the GS about it.

 

I've also noticed the XJ40 has risen above the rock bottom they were at a year or two back. To my eyes they deserve it; they have long been too cheap.

 

I think the Volvo 240 deserves to be a classic too now. Years ago I had a mate with a 265GLE. By God it liked a drink! It was a great thing to smoke around in though, in pale metallic green with beige leather. He was a builder, so moved things around. I remember we went off somewhere and picked up a largish cupboard, which kind of stuck out the back. Possibly overdoing the Lovejoy thing, we then went to the pub for a refresher. We ended up having to leave the damn Volvo in the pub car park overnight, but it was still there in the morning, complete with dewy cupboard. Very honest people in Leeds. Or a shit cupboard.

Loads of cars I have bought in the past have fallen into the 'ridiculously' cheap bracket as soon as I paid for them. Especially the ones that I bought to do up and sell on 'at a profit'. You could actually* hear the thud as the value hit rock bottom when I drove it away from the seller. I used to think the noise was just dodgy suspension, but no. It was just the value hitting "now worth fuck all".

 

As a result I am now keeping the Honda Prelude and MGF for ever, and never ever buying another car as they are the only cars I should ever need..*

Although Mrs Beard wants another slightly newer Honda Accord Estate as her daily quite soon. I am sticking with the Prelude and MGF.
