Fun with Renault Espace gearboxes, Auto ones in particular

Hi all.  I love french cars so I try and keep this one on the road and apologies for being a site lurker who rarely posts and occasionally buys things.

Anyway, it has developed the usual Renault DPO auto gearbox fault that might be a valve or might need a load of work being done... If it is a case of lots of work being done I will probably just replace the gearbox (I say just but apparently its far from it...)

To the point...  Does anybody know if I can use a gearbox from another vehicle?  I know Citroen and Renault use similar gearboxes (with different codes).  Does anybody know if there is any interchangeability?

Its a 1999 petrol 2.0 16v

Any help would be greatly  appreciated.  Although my google-foo is pretty strong generally I am stuck on this one.

I gather it is a lot of work to be done. When ours did it I seemed to get the impression that it's a £5 seal which is right in the far end of the gearbox so it has to come out the car to get to it.

Probably the same box that's in the Scenic isn't it?

Yes... it doesnt look straight forward at all!  The scenic may be a good option as they seem a lot more of those around and Mr Breakers Yard has them stacked quite high...  A good starting point is probably climbing under/over them (and mine) and seeing what the codes are.

I might be a little attatched but it does seem unfair to crush a car due to what appears is a manufactures design fault so it must be done.

Right, time to climb under an old espace and find a gearbox code.

Unfair to crush a car because of a design flaw.

Autoshitist royalty speaking. MAXIMRESPEKYO that man!!!

That sounds like the best reason to crush a car. Mega respect to you though for sorting it, this will probably be the first time a broken Renner auto box has EVER been repaired.

I had the one in my Laguna fixed - but only because it was fairly cheap.
