Yo, VW people...

2003 Polo (not ours), running rougher than rough thing which we have deduced is the throttle body knackered. However...the battery was also flat and we had to jump start the car. It ran (a bit shit as we expected) but after a short while the power steering packed up.

They seem to be electric on these but Google hasn't thrown up too much of any great help: is it possible that the battery is flat enough to not make the power steering operate fully? I know that sounds mad but wondered if it would be possible? The EML and the power steering light are on.

Thanks in advance me old taters.

Had a skoda fabia (same base), of similar era, where the electric power steering is very voltage sensitive. Charge the battery up well and try again. On mine the battery would start it fine, but still had steering problems, a new battery cured them all.

Thanks, that could be good news.

Makes sense. When you nearly go to stall power steering goes heavy (so less electricity will get produced). So if the battery is knacked ill will be making less power...?

Very common with batteries that appear to be 'ok' - try a donor one if you can. Should sort itself out. Changed ruck loads of them 'back inn day innit m8'

Ta muchly. Apparently they had it connected to a fault code reader which suggested the battery has shat itself and it's now cleared the codes. So that's a potentially cheap car they won't budge on price on :-D
