Conrad D. Conelrad Posted March 30, 2014 Author Posted March 30, 2014 Update: roof finished, looks great. Unfortunately I have thoroughly ruined my back doing it, I'm in agony and can barely walk. Need a better hobby, like model trains or something.
Junkman Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Would you like to machine polish it?I've just done it to two cars and holy shit is all I can say.I have everything here for it, feel free.
Conrad D. Conelrad Posted March 30, 2014 Author Posted March 30, 2014 Thanks, I might at some point. I just wanted to do the roof because it was so seriously oxidised. The front end's pretty good, and the rear end is a bit beyond polish!
dollywobbler Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 I did have an aerosol of Tobacco Leaf that I could have sent to you, had I not used it all up to spray the newly-welded sill on the Discovery. Felt suitable for another Solihull product. Sorry.

Conrad D. Conelrad Posted April 1, 2014 Author Posted April 1, 2014 I have sorted the temperature gauge in the red issue, it was an airlock. Gauge sits dead centre now. Nice simple one, that. Junkman, PhilA and Bobthebeard 3
Conrad D. Conelrad Posted April 29, 2014 Author Posted April 29, 2014 I have sorted the temperature gauge in the red issue, it was an airlock. Gauge sits dead centre now. Nice simple one, that. lol no But now with cautious optimism I think I might have solved this issue. First job was to check the radiator. I took it to my radiator testing facility, but not a single air bubble was seen. It might not be working at full efficiency but at least it's not leaking. Next up: the thermostat, trapped under the fused on housing. An afternoon of PlusGas, prying screwdrivers and (most effectively) mallets got that changed for a known good one (albeit 88º instead of 82º) with only one snapped stud. Bucketeer and Junkman 2
Junkman Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 If you throw a stat into boiling water and it doesn't fully open within two seconds, it's buggered.I suggest to put an 82º one in though.
Wilko220 Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 I think that's about 88, I'll take it! If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 degrees... you're gonna see some serious shit. Conrad D. Conelrad, mouseflakes, beko1987 and 2 others 5

Took it about 15-20 seconds in boiling water to open a small amount. But it did open, which may be why the car was never actually overheating. I'll get it a brand new 82º for it before the weekend. That 88 one has to be several decades old itself.
Junkman Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 But it did open, which may be why the car was never actually overheating. Your car isn't haunted. Mine would have turned into a gusher spring scalding every nun and kitten within a square mile, before causing a crater the size of Triesnecker and shitting yet another gearbox. brickwall, beko1987, Conrad D. oman5 Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 That's still a tad hot I reckon. my 2200 runs smack on the 85.
plasticvandan Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 drill a small 4-5mm hole in the flange of the stat,it helps stop air locks
Conrad D. Conelrad Posted May 21, 2014 Author Posted May 21, 2014 Just for closure that whole temperature thing turned out to be a shit (brand new) rad cap. Last Friday I bought a slightly pricier Gates branded one (still only £6.50) with a hologram sealed box, and the car didn't lose a drop of water over the whole Shitefest weekend (~275 miles). Previously it would've peed the contents of its radiator out over 20 miles. Gauge remained safely in the green zone the whole time too. I'm annoyed with myself for forgetting the old adage that all new parts are crap until proven otherwise, but all's well that ends well.
Junkman Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 brand new I hate everything new. It's all tosh. solid61, Squire_Dawson and mercrocker 3

Magnificent Rustbucket Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 The P6 is such a stylish car. A V8 is the perfect engine for it.
