Shiters experiences with veg oil running.

Nobody has mentioned oil changes yet. It is ESSENTAIL to change engine oil on veg cars regularly, especially if just used for short runs. The oil builds up deposits of veg/condensed water and forms thick sludge that kills your engine very quickly. Veg and mineral oils do not like to mix, standard fuels evaporate off and are fed back into the engine, veg does not. I found a long list of scientific experiments from the last half of the 20th century on running various engines on all types of veg, used, virgin, rapeseed, soya, sunflower, etc etc. The conclusion to every experiment was that premature engine failure had happened or was likely to happen due to infrequent oil changes.

Also veg and 'black diesel' (engine oil) should not be mixed in the fuel tank or in a batch of veg in a processor - they just 'emulsify' and form a mixture that will not filter.

Carbon build-up on pistons, valves and injectors is likely to be the result of long periods of running running low revs and low loads - generators etc. Giving engines a really good blast when warm is the best way to clean carbon build-up off.

I have heard various people using high pressure water injection into the intake when the engine is hot and running hard to clean the carbon off. I wouldn't reccomend doing anything drastic till doing plenty of reading up - but it seems to be a well known technique.

will a Toyota Hilux Surf. 4X4 1992 take veg? My mate only got it 2 days ago so not sure what the pump is. Its a grey import.

Probably a Bosch ve or a clone. So probably. That's a lot of probability..:-)

Is that just for used veg though, Explosive?

I wouldn't risk missing engine oil changes on virgin veg either. Its more or less exactly the same as used just thinner in viscosity.

Giving it a good blast fairly regularly should keep carbon buildup off the pistons/ valves.

I can imagine some of the later XUD engine with an EGR valve making an awful mess in the inlet manifold when running veg.

They are bad enough on DERV.

I shouldn't say it outloud but Xantia is back to being a happy puppy on veg. Happily does 90 without effort . I think weather being warmer helps :)
