Cavcraft Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 Right, followed these instructions the other day... http://sirbendy.co.uk/car-projects/vauxhall-automatics/fixing-the-vauxhall-flashing-s-of-doom/ ...but didn't actually follow them to the letter as it was a rush job and I didn't clean the offending part up. Anyhow, refitted it and the problem came back, so I stripped it off again only this time (like a knob) I left it in park. Stripped the bit down, thoroughly cleaned and greased etc, re-fitted now the car won't start.I reckon the box thinks it's in gear so won't have it, and we moved the part around manually selected different clicks on the gearbox. There is only resistance on one of them (which we assumed was 'park') and nothing in the other gear positions when we moved car back and forth. Expected to find resistance in all six other positions (1, 2, 3 drive, reverse and park) but it's only in one place. We have checked wiring connections etc and nothing obvious amiss by the way. Any thoughts, is there an inhibitor switch I've missed somewhere? Cheers in advance, all Vauxhalls are shit etc.
catsinthewelder Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 If this was something newish I would expect it to need a code clearing before you could proceed. It's the Corsa of grimness though isn't it? In which case it probably only needs a certain electrical path open in the gearbox in order to start. Assuming that then I would open it back up again and check that all your contacts that are supposed to conduct electricity actually do. You might be able to check this by wedging the pins of a multimeter into the wiring connector but you would need to know what results to look for in order to diagnose it. Cavcraft 1
Cavcraft Posted February 26, 2014 Author Posted February 26, 2014 Thanks. My lad did suggest I might have got the special grease on one of the contacts, but I seem to think the user guide actually suggested doing so. I'll take it to bits again and see if there's anything obvious wrong with it, many thanks.

Cavcraft Posted February 26, 2014 Author Posted February 26, 2014 Took it off (again) and stripped it (again) and....the three little U shaped copper (or brass) bushes had come out. A lot of fiddling about later they were back in, so I tightened the unit up extra hard and carried it gently to the car. Success! The car started. Unsuccess: The original problem is back! I might try a scrappy tomorrow and spend up to a tenner, otherwise the car is going to be sold for scrap. The thought of sending one of these over the bridge abhors me, so fingers crossed for a scrap yard cure.
phil_lihp Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 The thought of sending one of these over the bridge regards me with disgust and hatred And that's my grammar pedantry done for tonight. I suppose you could always put a manual gearbox in it.
Tetleysmooth Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 Billy, I'll bring my shotgun up, we'll take it to a field and put it out of its misery.
